4.0 out of 5 stars For a motorcycle, it's a charm
I'm not an advocate of B/D products. They're cheaply made, and, you get what you pay for. Nonetheless, I was in a hurry to acquire a 6" waver/polisher for my motorcycle. And since I would be using this product merely once a week, I didn't want to fork out my life's pension for, say... a porter cable. The unit is compact enough to polish the tight space-confining...

If your just getting into auto detailing as a home consumer, this product isn't bad. The ON/OFF switch is a bit quirky and at times difficult to use if your only using one hand on the buffer and the other holding the cord.

The second issue is with the bonnets, the lambswool bonnets that came with the unit both get soiled extremely fast, and basically are good for one use only. The foam applicator pad couldnt get on the buffer without tearing, I never used it. I purchased this unit with a 6pack of microfiber bonnets from autogeek on Amazon, so I wasnt concerned about the supplied pads, but from B&D they should supply better quality pads.

If I were doing it again, I would not buy this product, but look for another 6" - 7/' orbital buffer.

And since I would be using this product merely once a week, I didn't want to fork out my life's pension for, say... a porter cable. The unit is compact enough to polish the tight space-confining places on a bike. It's orbital action is fine. 10-feet of cord is a plus. Only thing I dislike about the unit is the elastic-style pads that are shipped. And, the applicator pad is foam. Yuk. Then again... it's Black and Decker. Need I say more?
Been using the product for about 3 weeks now. No malfunction problems so far. However, something tells me the switch will be the first to go. It's not a prominent switch, making it tricky (at times) to turn on and off.
In sum, I think it's work the purchase... as long as it won't be used for some heavy duty, constant detailing.

2.0 out of 5 stars costly replacement pads, January 18, 2005
This review is from: Black & Decker WP900 6-Inch Random Orbit Waxer/Polisher (Tools & Home Improvement)
I gave this to my dad for xmas. At first he was really psyched. It worked well the first time that he used it, but you need to replace the pads everytime you use it and it does not come with any extras. When he searched around for replacement pads he found it almost impossible to locate them at a hardware or electronics store. The best that he could do was have them ordered, which cost a ridiculous amount of money. It's just like home printers for your computer: the actual printer is really affordable, but where they get you is the cost of the ink cartridge. I guess B&D took a peice out of the hewlett packard business model.

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes polishing, waxing and glazing a breaze!, August 16, 2007

This review is from: Black & Decker WP900 6-Inch Random Orbit Waxer/Polisher (Tools & Home Improvement)
I'm glad I didn't spend 5 times the price of this random orbital polisher on that other guy's product. Although the foam pad is unreplacable, I put microfiber bonnets over the padded bonnets and it worked just like the more-expensive competitors' models.

It actually took more time to put the wax ON the car than it did to buff it off! I wish I bought one years ago!

PROS: Price was great, performance is awesome, comfortable handles and lightweight. No performance issues at all.

CONS: No replaceable foam pad (just double up the bonnets), no speed adjustment, and the rubber button cover fell off (at no detriment to function.)

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Polisher!, December 25, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Black & Decker WP900 6-Inch Random Orbit Waxer/Polisher (Tools & Home Improvement)
I recieved this polisher as a gift and could not have been happier. It is easy to use and light enough that most people can reach with it and still maintain control. Although the thought of a cordless unit is nice, I just can't see the same ROI in the long run. I noticed that someone wrote a review stating that the pad blew apart, I luckly had no issues with this being a problem. Besides, it's B&D, they have fantastic service and you can get parts or a replacement unit easily.
It would be nice to have a bigger pad relative to the body width, but with some creativity I have enhanced the diameter and outfitted it with some alternate pads.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good product, but..., June 30, 2009

I bought this buffer from Target, instead of a $100+ Porter Cable buffer to buff waterspots off of my car's finish and to put an even coat of wax on. The buffer itself feels fairly sturdy and durable. The 10' cord is long enough to reach. The buffer's motor operates smoothly, but it is quite loud if you turn it on not pressed against the car. It was able to spread an even coat of wax over the whole car with just a few ounces of Meguires cleaner wax (1st step, day 1).

Eventually though, the foam applicator became clogged with wax. When I attempted to remove the bonnet to clean it and maybe use it again, a large chunk of the surface ripped rendering it un-usable. I will never use the wool bonnets because they are very harsh on paint finishes. The buffer ought to come with more than one foam applicator as they are pretty much 1 time use only. If anything, put 1 wool bonnet in the package and 2 foam applicators. To top it all off, B&D pretty much has you over a barrel in terms of replacement pads. NO COMPANY offers 6" foam pads for this, so you're stuck paying $3 per pad and $11 shipping from B&D for replacements, plus their parts website is poorly designed and very slow. I bought 5 pads literally 10 minutes ago, but it took 2 days to successfully order them!

The longevity of the buffer is yet to be determined...

OVERALL: Good actual buffer, poor pad design and number of pads, poor customer support website.

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't Like it., August 12, 2011

Don't like the applicator bonnet. It's made of foam & fit's really, really tight so it ripped the first time I took it off. There are no paint stores, or auto parts stores that sell applicator bonnets, you have to order from the internet & those were very difficult to find. The buffer wool bonnets have enough wiggle room so they are easily removed. Bottom line, don't like it..should be able to find the bonnets in stores.

This Black & Decker polisher replaces the previous B&D polisher I owned for 15 years. I've done 3 cars so far and it works great. The pad is firm but still allows access to tight areas. I also like the extra handle. The power button can be a little clumsy but overall, I highly recommend it.

this is a good average polisher, does job very well got good power, despite having very tender foam applicator pad, the 6 inch backing plate which is black very firm foam seems to be little small for overall size of polisher, i went to walmarts purchased 2.00 bux worth of industrial strength adhesive back velcro, cut it to fit, and stuck it to hard foam backing plate, on the black n decker polisher, i already had some lake country css 7.5 inch foam pads that are made for a 6 inch backing plate, and they stuck very good and will not come off till you pull them off, this turned this polisher in a hook n loop system, made the polisher a lot better polisher worth twice the money, and works very good, and there are any atachments you might want for this system, terry cloth bonnets, microfiber bonnets that fit right over the 7.5 inch pads lots of other atachments for a hook n loop backing plate, check auto geeks if u cant find it on amazon, just let the polisher do the work and you will be very satisfied,

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazingly Effective, June 7, 2009
This review is from: Black & Decker WP900 6-Inch Random Orbit Waxer/Polisher (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought this for my motorcycle and car. Both are black. They say black is not a color - it's a second job. Well I needed some help on my second job.

The first thing you wonder with something of this price is "What's the catch?". So far, I cannot find any.

Effectiveness - Runs circles around hand application (pun intended). It removes swirl marks with minimal effort, and does so very quickly. Using basically the weight of the tool and just enough downward pressure to keep the pad flat to the paint, you can get the job done and produce mirror finish results. I was a bit sad (not the product's fault) to realize how much time I've wasted over the years doing it by hand.

Ergonomics - Comfortable to hold, vibration and noise are reasonable (no hearing protection required IMO). Power switch is under a rubber boot and can require a few tries to activate.

Accessories - The slip on terry bonnets are effective and have withstood several wash/rinses. You will probably need an extension cord (not supplied) for your car.

Durability - Can't tell yet as I've only used it a half dozen times. This is probably my main concern. But at the price, if it lasts a few years I will be delighted.

Watch for - Running the tool before it's against the paint with product applied will make quite a mess. Spend a minute or two to get the bonnet evenly adjusted all the way around the applicator pad. It might fit right away, but you'll get vibrations unless its evenly adjusted. Think of it like balancing a car wheel - if it's not even it will vibrate.

Conclusions - Get it! I will report back on durability in another 6 months.
