I've used this on a 2 day trip in Australia while climbing outdoors. It worked super well, and I had no problems belaying or rappelling with it. Just don't touch it right after you rappel, b/c it can heat up like a mother.

It's as basic as they get. This is durable and dependable. The standard of the industry. If you want a good started belay device, get it.

I've used the ATC for more than 15-years. It's easy to use and always reliable. When I needed a second one for a family member... no brainer.

Very smooth belay device. Construction is solid. Easy to use. Fits my 10.2mm rope fine without having to muscle the rope though. Black Diamond has great products all around.

Can't complain with the price. It works fine. Kinda heavy and you need to pull hard to brake but it keeps your attention on the rope!

Its simple, works great and means I don't need to borrow one or pay to rent for the day at the local climbing gym. There isn,'t much to it but it work great.

Pros:
Choice of 3 Colors
Lightweight
Dissipates Heat Nicely
Smooth Action

Cons:
(Nothing comes to mind)

Thoughts:
It's a nice and cheap device. Used for rappelling and top rope climbing. Another option is the ATC-XP from Black Diamond -- these have the friction ridges on one side for $3 more. It's all preference though. Other than the Gri-Gri, there really isn't much of an alternative to fault the design. No cons here.

After 200 climbs, it's holding up as expected. The red finish is getting marred, but that was also expected. The platinum color is a classic look -- won't show it's age as much.

Bottom Line: Recommended.
