The self-locking capability of the Black Diamond ATC Guide belay device makes it an excellent choice when you cast off on multi-pitch trad, ice, and alpine climbs. This allows you to eat, drink, tie your shoes, and take pictures as you belay with confidence that your partners are completely safe. Its unique release point lets you lower a following climber when the ATC Guide is in self-locking mode, even if he's way heavier than you. The aggressive V-notch allows this belay device to work on ropes from 7.7 to 11mmeven when they're icy.

I bought this device on a whim when I was buying my first set of climbing gear... and it is one of the better investments I've ever made. The sheer versatility of it makes it a valuable addon to your climbing rack. I've used it for self belay, top rope, rappelling, and even Aussie rappelling (not an intended us, but it works really well). Beginner or Expert alike, I highly recommend this ATC.

Bought this for my sister after having used the same one for years. It is my favorite ATC to date and it holds up to any condition with most set ups. The guide loop is especially useful in anchor set ups or climbing with lighter belayers.

If you do multipitch, this is an awesome belay/rappel device. Set up in guide mode, it is incredibly easy to belay from the anchor. Good for ice climbing. Can be used to belay 2 seconds.
