Hard to rate this as I've never had to really use it to save my life and I hope I never will have to use it that way. I got it as added insurance in addition to probe, beacon, shovel and buddy. I figured it would buy me extra minutes of air in case I get buried or fall into a tree well. M/L fits comfortably over my jacket (I'm male, wear L jacket, 190 lbs, 42" chest). I wear my pack over it. Along with the pack straps it leaves my chest area a bit cluttered, but I can still access my chest pockets. In order to be truly useful in an emergency it has to be fully extended and in my mouth while skiing which can be a bit distracting at first, especially while trying to yell at my friends. In a fall in deep powder, if it's not in my mouth, the mouthpiece can fill with snow rendering it useless for breathing. When breathing on it the valve makes a distracting honking sound (- 1 star for that). I recommend it for anybody going into the backcountry or trees.

Construction seems quite solid. Overall it's quite light and you don't really notice the weight.

Although it's definitely something you never want to test out (other than practicing with it), considering the size and weight, definitely a bonus to be wearing in the backcountry, and very easy and comfortable to wear.

Regarding sizing, I'm a good 5'10" (178cm), 155lbs with a slim athletic build and M/L seems to fit fine. Not overly loose over clothing, definitely not tight. I was right in the middle of sizes as well and wasn't sure whether or not to buy the smaller size. Got a tip from another review to get M/L, and it seems like a good fit.
