Airbourne - "Ain't No Way But the Hard Way"

Joel O’Keeffe- Vocals/Lead Guitar
Ryan O’Keeffe- Drums
David Roads- Guitar
Justin Street- Bass

There’s something about the kind of potent rock and roll fury that Airbourne cranks out, all cylinders firing, that makes you want to chug a beer straight down your throat and punch the air as though it’d touched your wife inappropriately. It sounds crude, we ... Read more in Amazon's Airbourne Store

Editorial Reviews

Black Dog Barking, the band's triumphant 2013 album, is a furious declaration of all that it means to feel truly alive in service to the great spirit of rock n' roll music. Airbourne's third record is nothing less than the sum total of all that Airbourne has aspired to since the band formed in Warrnambool, Victoria, Australia over 10 years ago.

Black Dog Barking is without a doubt one of the most honest rock n' roll records available at the moment. "It's everything we've got to give, " Joel declares. "We put our heart and soul into this one. If you love rock n' roll, you're gonna love this. "

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Album May 25, 2013
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I have been a fan of this band since their first album (Runnin' Wild). I've read all the criticism about them being "AC/DC wannabes." But, I disagree. Yes, they are obviously strongly influenced by AC/DC and you can hear it in the music. But, so what? A lot of great bands show a strong influence by earlier great bands. This band takes that influence and makes it their own. It's just 80's style hard rocking, head banging, and fun. No ballads or wimpy love songs...just driving rock rhythms.

In my opinion, Airbourne's first album was great and fun to listen to but lacked a bit of studio polish. It was a bit raw...with more of a first take, live performance sound than a polished studio album. Their second album (No Guts. No Glory) was a lot more polished and even better than the debut. The same hard rocking sound, but cleaner and crisper. This third album continues that progression.

There are several really good songs on this album. But, I'm glad I got the Special Edition version as I think "You Got the Skills (to Pay the Bills)" and "Party in the Penthouse" are two of the better songs on the album. My favorite is "Live it Up." Ironically, my least favorite is the title track, "Black Dog Barking." It is still a good tune, just (IMHO) not as good as others.

So, if you like hard rocking with strong guitar riffs, driving drum beats, and screaming vocals, give this band a listen. They are not AC/DC, but I think they are as good as or better than Rhino Bucket or any other of the more recent followers of the AC/DC genre.

4.0 out of 5 stars Special edition/deluxe not available on CD?! May 28, 2013
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
WTF?! I still buy CD's. I do not download!! I hate it when the record companies decide to put bonus tracks on the download version or sell a deluxe version for a few dollars more than the regular version. Stop wasting money and ruining the business and just put out the best version possible to everyone so we don't have to search for the one we want!!

5.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars - don't overthink it; just turn it up! June 7, 2013
Format:Audio CD
For their third album, titled Black Dog Barking, Australian rockers Airbourne continue to develop their sound, opting for more progressive arrangements and subtle, introspective lyrics that OMG I can't even type that with a straight face! Come on; it's Airbourne we're talking about here! This is big, dumb AC/DC-worshipping rock, and it's completely awesome.

Airbourne has never been the most original band, and that doesn't change here. Black Dog Barking picks up right where No Guts, No Glory and Runnin' Wild left off: with the band stealing from AC/DC's playbook and having a helluva time doing it. We get ten new hard rocking, hard partying songs chock full of huge riffs, catchy rhythms and Joel O'Keefe singing about women, wine and partying hard in his signature raspy voice. Album opener (and first single) "Ready to Rock" is this album's "Stand Up for Rock n' Roll," and it's such an awesome track. "No One Fits Me (Better Than You)" and "Woman Like That" are two other songs I keep cranking up, but honestly there's not a single dud on this album.

This one's a no-brainer (in a couple of different ways, I suppose). If you liked the first two Airbourne albums, you're going to love Black Dog Barking. If you're looking for anything other than simple, fun rock music that sticks close to an established band's sound, you'll want to keep going. Besides, if AC/DC isn't interested in making new albums, why not enjoy the next best thing?

Edition Notes: There is a Special Edition of Black Dog Barking with three additional studio tracks. It appears to be digital-only, and you can buy the bonus tracks individually if you already have the standard album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Airbourne rlz May 25, 2013

Smoking hot playing all the way around highlights Airbournes 3rd release. Of coarse theres the old school AC/DC sound. But on this album they pull out a lot of Def Leppard era High N Dry sounds. Straight forward no BS Rock n Roll.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Rock 'n' Roll May 25, 2013
By matt
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Many hate on this band because they supposedly sound like AC/DC. Their not AC/DC nor do they sound like them. What makes people believe they do sound like them is the screaming vocalist and that they make some great rock n' roll. Black Dog Barking will be a trend setting album for future rock, definitely a definitive album for Airbourne. Much of Airbourne's music will get your blood pumping and is surrounded by great lyrics. Those songs on this album include "Back In The Game", a very Cinderella Sounding song; "Hungry" which is about always pushing for what you want and the title track which has a similar theme to the other three especially when vocalist Joel says "It's not the size of the dog in the fight, its the size of the fight in the dog". Highlights of this album are every song on it. You will not stop listening to it unless your a hater, in that case you have to stop thinking Airbourne as an AC/DC knockoff, cause their not. Like any band you can hear their influences and there are many, one of which is AC/DC, but other bands like Motorhead, Cinderella and Def Leppard are all evident in their music.
