5.0 out of 5 stars Progress doesn't mean selling out, December 1, 2005
By
This review is from: Black Dress in a B Movie (Audio CD)
Looking at the number of stars given to this album here on Amazon.com, I felt the need to rebuke all the naysayers out there who claim that Keepsake sold out and that this is pop garbage. I sympathize with fans who were fans before this album came out. The previous albums were heavier and full of screaming vocals and to anticipate the release of a new album after waiting two years and having to listen to a completely softened version of, or even completely different version of the band's sound can stir up an immense amount of disappointment, believe me I know. Despite their progress into something different, they haven't sacrificed talent for album sales and dollar signs, and if you consider this pop, which I do not, then they can write one hell of a catchy pop tune. Yes we all change. We grow from angsty, slit-wrist teenagers who have nothing better to do but scream out our anger at the world, to young adults who have a better sense of what we want to do in this world, as well as the rest of our lives.

If you were a fan of Keepsake prior to the release of this album and have never heard this, or you are close minded and cannot adapt to change and will eventually be rooted out by darwinism anyway, then you probably will not like this.

But if you are open minded, enjoy a lighter, pop-rockish sound then by all means purchase this album with the intent of discovering a better version of keepsake, though I am in no way stopping you from enjoying the previous albums which were good but just not as good as this one.

Highlights of this album include but are not limited to:"Violent Love", "Ticket to Russia", and "American Fights".

4.0 out of 5 stars Not quite the same but overall excellent, May 2, 2003
This review is from: Black Dress in a B Movie (Audio CD)
Being a huge fan of eulogy records, I really got into Keepsake because they were such a great blend of hardvore, emo and rock. This album is much more pop rock oriented but that necessarily isnt a bad thing. The somewhat high pitched but incredible vocals are made for pop rock. While I sometimes miss the hardcore elements, the outstanding melodies and choruses more than compensate. I could easily see many of these songs on the radio. The one qualm I have is weaker lyrics than on previous efforts. While the instrumentation may not be better, the band plays as much more of a cohensive unit. Songs like "space bound", "slander", "cartoon life", "engaging war" are brilliant. The slower acoustic songs, "American Flights" and "A raindance narrative" were the weakest lyrically and also the poorest tracks on the album. The electric guitars and syncopations really are essential to Keepsake's power. Thankfully songs like "ticket to russia" and "space bound" showcase Keepsake's heavier side. I would say if you are new to Keepsake and looking for an good, upbeat, indie rock cd, this is the one to get.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the best, but certainly not bad., March 3, 2003

I was recently scrolling through Amazon looking for new music, along the lines of Finch, The Used, and Taking Back Sunday. A few months ago I came across Keepsake, and I got The Things I Would Say, and absolutely loved it. Then on to the End of Sound, which was remarkably better. I think Keepsake should stick with the mellower Emocore stuff, and thats what they did for Black Dress. I really liked the cd cause I really like the band, although I thought they may have gotten a little too mellow for my liking. Slander and Space Bound are great songs, but songs like A Raindance Narrative are really pushing the border of lame. But all in all its still a good buy if youre a fan, but if not, you prolly wanna check out the 1st 2 cds first.

5.0 out of 5 stars New CD, June 13, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Black Dress in a B Movie (Audio CD)
In the words of drummer Jesse Kriz, "this new album is just pure rock. Kinda like Jimmy Eat World meets Foo Fighters meets Incubus". I love this new CD. I got it at the show Monday night and I can't stop listening to it. The only Keepsake CD I had prior to this was The Things I Would Say. This is definitely more emo by a long shot, but worth the buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keepsake does it again, August 15, 2002

The words bad CD and Keepsake will never go together in my opinion. If you're a fan of this band you'll love this CD. While I don't think this CD is as good as their previous one (The End Of Sound) it still ranks up there. I thought the departure of guitarist Paul Geller would hurt this band, but they are still able to come up with some great stuff. I don't think Shane, Rob, and Jesse will have any problems keeping everything good for a while. This is the best band that you probably have never heard of.

Now for some other stuff concerning the CD . Some people obviously know nothing about the band and must have only heard their first CD (the things i would say) Keepsake hasn't sounded "hardcore" since that CD and was in fact made up of different members at that time (except for vocalist Shane Halpern and guitarist Paul Geller) This is their third CD since then so obviously they haven't sold out. They sound the same as they always have. Keepsake only had a bassist for that album as well (although this album does have a bass player which is clearly listed in the booklet for the CD) So take it from somebody that does know about this band, go out and buy it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Garbage, November 5, 2003
By
This review is from: Black Dress in a B Movie (Audio CD)
Listening to this album makes me want to puke. Sometimes I just want to ignore that they ever made this album and continue listening to the first 2 albums. They have completely gone pop. They went from emo hardcore (very similar sound to Senses Fail) to pure pop garbage (Simple Plan is a very good example of their new sound). Everyone who likes the 'harder' sounding Keepsake i recommend listening to Senses Fail which have not sold out.
