Book Description

Book Three in the Black Flagged Series

A tense alliance between General Sanderson and the CIA narrowly averts an apocalyptic attack by Islamic fundamentalists in Europe, but ultimately fails to recover the virus canisters. With the biological weapons still missing, the specter of an attack against the United States looms dangerously closer.

Desperate to stop Al Qaeda, Daniel Petrovich's "black ops" team is sent to investigate the last lead provided by Anatoly Reznikov, the twisted scientist responsible for designing the virus. What they uncover will shake U.S. authorities to the core.

Every canister of the Zulu Virus has been shipped to the United States...

Back in Washington D.C., this startling revelation is intensified by a grim discovery. Suspected Al Qaeda cells under FBI surveillance have been simultaneously massacred, targets of a shadowy domestic terror organization with ties to a rising political movement. When Special Agent in Charge Ryan Sharpe discovers that Al Qaeda lost possession of every virus canisters in the coordinated attack, he deploys Task Force Scorpion to hunt down a new breed of terrorist and recover the virus.

As Sharpe's task force unravels the curious fabric of True America's plot, they start to assemble the chilling details of an impending domestic bioweapons attack--on an unimaginable scale. With time expiring, and his task force running out of options, Sharpe embraces the illicit help of a sworn enemy, whose questionable tactics may be their only chance of stopping an insidious plan to destabilize the United States.

Black Flagged Apex propels the gritty, often unapologetic Black Flagged Series into new territory, where hidden agendas, startling betrayals and brutal action define the daily landscape navigated by the puppet masters and frontline operators in the war on terror.

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Steven graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1993, receiving a Bachelor of Science in English Literature. He served the next eight years on active duty in various Navy and Marine Corps units.

From leading Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS) operations as a boarding officer in the Arabian Gulf, to directing Close Air Support (CAS) as a Forward Air Controller (FAC) assigned to a specialized Marine Corps unit, Steven's "in-house" experience with a wide variety of regular and elite military units brings a unique authenticity to his writing.

His first novel, The Jakarta Pandemic (2010), explored the world of "prepping," well before television and books popularized the concept. Hailed as a "grippingly realistic" family survival story, The Jakarta Pandemic introduced thousands of readers to the unfamiliar concept of "survival in the suburbs," motivating many of them to take the first steps to better prepare themselves for a major disaster. His recently launched series, The Perseid Collapse, continues Steven's legacy of engaging (and informative) post-apocalyptic (SHTF) fiction.

Steven lives with his family in coastal, southern Maine, where he wakes up at "zero dark thirty" to write for most of the day. When "off duty," he struggles to strike a balance between a woefully short sailing season and unreasonably long winter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than Baldacci December 22, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
The first book I read of Konkoly's was "Black Flagged". Having read it, I was astounded at the realism of the action scenes and enthralled with the detailed description of the weaponry. The tactical details wove into the storyline could only have come from someone familiar with special ops procedures gleaned from his military background. I was hooked and have not found an author to date that has the ability to immerse you right into the middle of an action scene the way he does. He is an amazing talent destined for stardom. Since then, I have gone on to read both Black Flagged Redux and Black Flagged Apex. It's amazing that he has made such an impact as an author having only written 4 books to date. He has surpassed both Baldacci and Coonts in my opinion and is my number 1 read. He needs to quit his regular job and devote full time to his writing. This guy is that good.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Epic Addition to the Black Flagged Series December 26, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Apex is the third book in author Steven Konkoly's Black Flagged series and it might well be the best of the three. The twists and turns in this novel are varied and interesting, but the approach Konkoly takes here is a bit different than in his other novels. Bureaucratic infighting and intrigue have always been a staple in his past works, but here in Apex he raises the stakes even higher for Petrovich, Sanderson and his regular cast of BF characters.

The most intriguing character from Redux was a mad Russian scientist named Anatoly Reznikov. Reznikov makes his presence strongly felt in Apex, as evident by the canisters of Zulu virus he'd sold to Al Queda and shipped to the United States. The effects of this virus are monstrous and readers of Redux will no doubt remember the terrifying scene in that book when the citizens of a Russian city suffered from its cognitive backlash. Can you say zombies?

Apex, however, takes a different approach. The canisters end up in the hands of True America, a right wing political group aptly named and with two separate branches. The first, and the largest, takes shape as a legitimate grass roots political action group. The second branch is the more radical and shadowy of the two groups, working in militant fashion behind the scenes to effect change by any and all means possible. And if that includes viral poisoning then so be it.

A plot is set-up first by Al Queda and then by True America to unleash the virus on the American people, and it sets in furious motion the return of General Sanderson, a major source of intrigue in the BF series. In the previous novel, Sanderson's rogue outfit and the government worked to reach a fragile truce.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some of the best action scenes I have ever read!!!! February 23, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I remember that when I first read the original "Black Flagged", I was so impressed with the author's absolute stunning depictions of combat and action scenes, that I ended up emailing him after finishing the book to congratulate him on such a fine work. I hadn't done that before. I was equally impressed with the way conversation flowed so easily, enhancing the characters and giving them a gritty, but real and sometimes humorous makeup and depth. We are, of course, introduced to the primary operatives and those who would be their "handlers"; to layers of government in the form of good and decent CIA/FBI, and their requisite evil counterparts in those (and other) agencies that just have to exist to propel the adventures forward. Apex is a GREAT addition to the series. This book involves bio-terrorism, which is both well-researched and well crafted into a story and a surprise lesser character from previous books that now steps in to take his turn at bat for the team. This is like 24. It's like Clancy/Greaney meets Vince Flynn. It's just darned good.
