I'm clearly biased, but..., August 12, 2011
This review is from: The Black Garden (Paperback)
Because I have a story appearing in this volume, it may seem self-serving for me to review it. However, there are many other authors included in the collection, and no one has reviewed this yet. So here goes.
This collection is a mixed bag in several senses of the term. There's some dark sci fi, some body horror, some supernatural horror, etc. My favorite piece is Felicity Dowker's "Ill Conceived," about a woman who conceives a monstrous child outside her body. Fans of Stephen King and Dean Koontz may enjoy Aaron A. Polson's "Care and Feeding of the Old Flat Mile" and Allison M. Dixon's "Aria," both of which include all-American settings, haunted objects/places, and a focus on cars.
The drawback to the collection is that all the stories are so short. Most of them are glimpses, single scenes, etc. that don't get the space to develop. Mine certainly doesn't. On the other hand, the length makes for little horror snacks that are easy to fit in on a lunch break, etc. I hope you like it.
