This review is from: The Black Goatee (Paperback)
The Little sisters wrote a series of comic mysteries in a unique style; the Black Goatee is in the middle of the series (not that there are continuing characters--the style is so distinctive that the books are unmistakable). They combine wise-cracking heroines, meticulous clues, skillful misdirection, and interesting plots. As well, they provide a glimpse of life as it was lived in another time: private hospitals, World War II and post-war housing shortages, boarding houses, private incomes, night clubs, and servants for even the middle-class. The Littles, like Jane Austen, let the large issues of the day affect their characters only tangentially; their focus is on everyday life. This book is an entertainment, and well worth the time. This edition, from Tom and Enid Schantz' Rue Morgue Press, includes a short and enjoyable introduction to Constance and Gwyneth Little.
