A Beautiful Story of a Courageous Horse,
By
This review is from: Black Gold (Hardcover)
I first read this book when I was ten years old -- many many years ago. It was the first book I cried over, and while reading the other reviews, I find I was not the only one who cried about this story of a beautiful and courageous race horse. One of of my all-time children's classics!

I felt very sad reading this book because all the story characters died. But I liked the book alot because Black Gold won a lot of races and you see it. My favorite part was when You See It had her colt Black Gold.

Black Gold Review,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Black Gold (Paperback)
Black Gold is a wonderful and exciting book written by Marguerite Henry. This book takes place in the early 1900's. It's main settings are in Oklahoma in the Skiatook Derby and in Chickasha. It also takes place in Kentucky in the Kentucky derby and on the Idle Hour Farm. This book is based on a true story about a racing horse named U-See-It and her colt named Black Gold. One of the most important events in this book is when U-See-It is banished from all racing tracks in the United States because her owner, Al Hoots, refuses to sell her at a claiming race. After that, U-See-It is sent to Kentucky to have her colt, Black Gold.Black Gold becomes a great racing horse and wins the Kentucky Derby. Unfortunately, Black Gold is injured from a quarter crack in his hoof. As time goes on, Black Gold's leg falls off and Black Gold eventually dies. He has a burial ceremony and is buried in the middle of a field in New Orleans. One of the main conflicts is a person to person conflict because Black Gold's jockey, an Irish boy named Jaydee Mooney, can't agree with Black Golds trainer, Mister Webb, about how to fix the quarter crack. I really enjaoed this book and I think you will too. Marguerite Henry did an excelent job of writing this book. So go and read Black Gold!

One of the Best Horse Books Ever!,
This review is from: Black Gold (Paperback)
This book made me cry! At the beginning, it's a little boring, because it doesn't really appear to have anything to do with the main character, Black Gold! It's all about his dam (mother) Useeit. But after finishing the book you see how important it is that it's all in there, because it makes you adore Black Gold even more! This is a true story about a determined racer and a jockey who loves him so much he'll do anything to be with him, and a determined old trainer who made a big mistake.... It's amazing for any horse lover and I 100% gaurantee you'll love this book! If you don't love horses, you might find yourself really getting into them after this. I love horses and really love Thoroughbreds, and ride a half QH half TB! (he looks more QH) All I can say is this is a major must!

Black Gold, the Champion in Our Hearts,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Black Gold (School & Library Binding)
Filled with excitement, sorrow, and happy moments, this true story is bound to awaken your heart. What book could this be? Black Gold of course! The story's about a small Thoroughbred colt that seemed to have no potential, but turned out to be one of the greatest Thoroughbreds of all time! With the careful hands of Jaydee, Black Gold's determined jockey, Black Gold finishes his last race with "three legs and a heart."In the beginning, Jaydee and Black Gold have two separate stories in the same book. In fact, Black Gold doesn't even come into the story until a few chapters in. His mother, U-see-it, wins her owner, and soon to be Black Gold's owner, purses that just grow and grow. Black Gold's soon to be jockey shows that he will never give up right in the beginning of the book. The ending has a horrid feel to it, but still Marguerite Henry, the auther will warm your heart in a way that is unforgettable. Black Gold shares the message that you can never give up, no matter how hard the times are. When Black Gold is in serious pain, he doesn't give up. When Jaydee is put down, he doesn't give up, and when anyone has a challenge, they shouldn't give up either. They should overcome it with bravery and strength.

Measuring the Size of the Heart,
By Plume45 "kitka12345" (Westchester, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: BLACK GOLD (Marguerite Henry Horseshoe Library) (Paperback)
Inspired by a true story, Marguerite Henry continues her literary tradition--showcasing a love of horse (and mule) flesh for youngadult readers. Unlike the homespun crises in MISTY OF CHINCOTEAGUE this story takes readers into the harsh world of professional horse racing, with its stark risks and grim realities. Set in Okalahoma then in Kentucky in the 1920's this story relates the birth and racing career of a thoroughbred whose smaller stature causes him almost to be overlooked for serious training. Fortunately for horse and owner, Black Gold is loved by his young jockey, Jaydee--an Irish youth who recognizes the colt's potential and often argues with his adult trainer. There is inevitable conflict over the horse's training and career among the men who admire him--a struggle of wills, knowledge and equine insight which result in Jadyee's psychological coming-of-age. This YA weepie provides a realistic lens on various aspects of life around Track--culminating with a running of the historic Kentucky Derby itself. Horse and Youth must demonstrate that it's the size of the heart in each one, working as a team, which ultimately matters in a highly competitive world. Even adults are advised to keep a hanky handy as Henry's tale unfolds.

This is a story about a small stallion named Black Gold. He may be small, but he isn't bad. This is a heart breaking story. The boldest words I remember are the end. Black Gold's leg snapped because of a hoof crack. The words that I will always remember is: "He finished the race with three legs and a heart" That had made me cry. People of all ages should enjoy this book. Take my advice and BUY THIS BOOK!
