FROM THE INTRODUCTION TO THE BLACK BOOK GUIDE TO OFFICIAL COUNTRY MUSIC FAN CLUBS: THE TOP 100 I started researching and writing the Black Book Press Guide to Official Country Music Fan Clubs because of Donna Fargo. When I worked at a small university in Georgia, my friend Lavaughn and I were always two of the first to arrive on campus each morning. As he drove past my office on the way to the cafe he would call me and sing Donna Fargo s Happiest Girl in the Whole U.S.A. Good mornin , morning. Hello, sunshine. Wake up, sleepyhead. I d laugh and sing along with him. Why d we move that Bojangle clock so far away from the bed? One day over coffee we pondered the meaning of the line about the Bojangle clock. Just what exactly is a Bojangle clock? Lavaughn asked. I don t know, I said. We should write Donna Fargo and ask her. We did. And Dona Fargo wrote back. It turns out when she was writing Happiest Girl in the Whole USA, she woke up one morning with Mr. Bojangles playing on the clock radio. She also sent us an autographed 8X10 glossy photo. I m the happiest girl in the whole U.S.A. Country music artists and fans have always enjoyed a special relationship. Now, especially in this electronic age of digital music and the Internet, country music artists still communicate with their fans like no other performers. Movie and TV actors seldom answer fan letters anymore and may even discourage writing. Many singers and musicians outside of country can be reached only through a manager or agent. Country music remains deeply rooted in its most cherished traditions, and its fan clubs thrive. It is not unusual for even the biggest country star to make a reply on a message board or personally autograph a photograph. Some, like Blake Shelton, even answer email. --Black Book Press
