5.0 out of 5 stars Great Album, December 24, 2002
This review is from: Black Hair Black Eyes Black Suit (Audio CD)
Ok this album stands on it's own, not just for Stranglers fans. Hugh has developed himself fully here. The Stranglers were a unique bunch...I think so unique that it's hard to play them in a music mix (such as radio), because they just stood out too much. Hugh has found a less aggressive style, a bit more reserved on this album, but his song writing is stronger than ever.
I recently put Hot Head on a cd mix and it still stands out among the other artists, but it makes me happy that it is so strong.
Hughs music still excites me, him and Johnny Cash. I think they have some things in common. I'd like to hear Johnny Cash cover Golden Brown.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cornwell's best solo effort to date, February 26, 1999

Former Stranglers singer/guitarist Hugh Cornwell's best solo album to date. Hugh plays guitar on the entire recording, something he hasn't done for the last two solo efforts, and it sure is good to hear his trademark playing. Hugh's singing is in top form also. It seems his voice hasn't changed at all in 20 plus years. Stand outs on the CD are the title track(MIB connection?); "Snapper" (Good old Hugh); "Torture Garden" and, well, everything else too! I do miss "Five Miles High" from the import though. All in all a breezy upbeat pop masterpiece.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best album to date by Hugh Cornwell, May 13, 1999

This is hands down, Hugh's best solo album. The opening track is exhilarating. May I say, it almost borders on being life-affirming, Exciting and adventerous. The production is brilliant. Laurie Latham worked his magic on this album just like he did with the Stranglers' fantastic Aural Sculpture. I have always loved Hugh's voice and guitar playing and have always admired his stellar work with the highly underrated Stranglers (I sometimes wonder why the U.S. never recognized Stranglers albums like "the Raven" for being the masterpieces that they are). Hugh's newest album is not noisy by any stretch. It is intelligent rock that embraces different styles and has real heart. I highly recommend it especially when compared to the sounds turned out by the mainstream image-obsessed "musicians" who are polluting our airwaves.
