Below average lamp,

This review is from: Black Halogen 175 Watt Torchiere Floor Lamp
Bought this lamp back in June, and it's already having problems 4 months later. The lamp simply isnt that bright, and unless you are literally within a few feet of the lamp, you will not get much illumination. It's not bright enough to even light up a 300 sq ft room!
Good luck buying replacement bulbs with it too. The lamp uses a 110-130volt, 175W bulb. Except, it's very uncommon to find a bulb that fits this exact specs. If you go over on any spec (i.e. a 200W bulb) the internal circuit breaker kicks in and the lamp wont work. If you go less, (i.e. 100W bulb) the lamp either doesnt work, or you get even less lighting than with the 175W bulb, which was terrible to begin with. The customer service from Lamp Plus is terrible too. I received a bad bulb from them, and they have ignored all my emails in trying to find support for this situation and replacing the bulb. It's a below average product from a below average company in my experience.

I too had problems with the initial bulb with this lamp and it took me a while to find a replacement:
Bulbrite KX-2000 (KX180T4CL) ($4.99 and above) Now, the light works great for my basement office, just in time for daylight savings!

I received this 175 Watt Black Halogen Torchiere about 1 month ago. Assembly was relatively easy, though the assembly instructions left a bit to be desired as is common. The unit looks nice, and has a heavy solid feel to it. It is about half as bright subjectively as my previous 300 Watt unit, which was available without safety features in the 'good old days'. Of course, those that put their curtains on fire in the past might have a different view on the lack of safety features on the old models. This one comes 1) with a glass cover on the bulb, 2) with a wire mesh protecting the bulb/cover unit from contact with curtains etc, and 3) a 180 Watt electronic cutoff box installed on the power cable. And herein lies the problem - at least in my unit the 180 Watt cutoff circuit can not handle the 175 Watt bulb that came with the lamp. At irregular intervals spaced between 2 seconds and 20 minutes the cutoff engages and the lamp turns off. One can turn it back on later, but the whole affair makes the lamp pretty useless. A 5 Watt safety margin between rated bulb wattage and cutoff wattage just doesn't allow enough margin of operation it seems. Anyways, for those not too preoccupied with safety features and equipped with a soldering iron, the removal of the cutoff box is not a big affair. Of course I can't publicly recommend doing this. Probably better to look for a different unit.
