Book Description

Campaigns and Commanders August 1, 2008

In 1832, facing white expansion, the Sauk warrior Black Hawk attempted to forge a pan-Indian alliance to preserve the homelands of the confederated Sauk and Fox tribes on the eastern bank of the Mississippi. Patrick J. Jung here re-examines the causes, course, and consequences of the ensuing war with the United States, a conflict that decimated Black Hawk’s band. Correcting mistakes that plagued previous histories, and drawing on recent ethnohistorical interpretations, Jung shows that the outcome can be understood only by discussing the complexity of intertribal rivalry, military ineptitude, and racial dynamics.

5.0 out of 5 stars A handful of black-and-white maps and illustrations grace this chronicle, September 2, 2007
Patrick J. Jung (Assistant Professor of History, Milwaukee School of Engineering) presents The Black Hawk War of 1832, an in-depth examination of the last Indian war that was fought in present-day Wisconsin and Illinois. Volume ten in the Campaigns and Commanders series, The Black Hawk War of 1812 covers the war from rumors preceding its inception to the major battles of the storm, and calm that settled after it. A handful of black-and-white maps and illustrations grace this chronicle, written in plain terms to be accessible to scholars and non-specialist general readers alike

5.0 out of 5 stars Clear picture of the conflict and all the players, May 5, 2011
This review is from: The Black Hawk War of 1832 (Campaigns and Commanders) (Paperback)
This is a very well-written book on an important topic: the conflict between the United States and "The British Band" led by Sauk warrior Black Hawk, a war which was forever associated with its Native American leader and which basically put an end to the Native American wars of the upper Midwest. Jung completely avoids the pitfalls that sometimes plague the tomes of university presses: rarified but basicallly unintelligible prose. Although the book is filled with many details -- every operation, every movement, and every player whether major or minor -- Jung's writing is intelligent and straightforward.

I've read up on the watershed Black Hawk war but this book paints such a clear picture of the event, its players, and its ramifications, that in my opinion, it is the best.

The Black Hawk War...we remember the classic battles between the Cavalry and the Indian Nations. This story is a Wisconsin based one about the Black Hawk War...learn the strategies of both sides...see how the war develops and the battles rage. Great reading for those who love westerns, war, American Indian history, and military stories.
