The FINAL book in The Curse Worker's Series! What will happen to Cassel? What will happen to Lila? I NEEDED TO KNOW. And I found out.

Black Heart was a great ending to the story of Cassel, Lila, and the crew. Loose ends were tied up and people, essentially, got what was coming to them. Did I like it as much as the first two? No, but that's because it felt like not enough stuff was going on. It wasn't as thrilling as the first two and I guess that usually happens in the final book of a series. I wanted more from Black Heart but let me be clear that I still loved this book.

Cassel really comes into his own in this book. I don't know quite how to describe it but he goes from being "baby bird brother" to a REAL MAN. And I've enjoyed watching him learn and grown over this series.

I recommend this series to all readers, especially if you're looking for something VERY unique and yet, can be paralleled with our world today.

Cassel Sharpe's world is a place of light and dark -- he was raised in a world of mobs and con-men, but he wishes he could live among the law-abiding people.

But he finds that those places are not as different as some people think in "Black Heart," which throws even more snarls into the teen transformation worker's life. Holly Black wraps up her Curse Workers trilogy with gritty, witty writing and intertwining subplots -- but the real draw here is the tumultuous relationship between Cassel and Lila, and what will happen to them.

Cass has never been further from Lila Zacharov -- not only is she furious at him, but he's working for the FBI and she for her father's mob. But he finds himself being drawn back in when he learns that his mom is in trouble -- she stole the legendary Resurrection Diamond from Zacharov years ago, and if Cass wants to ensure his mother's safety, he'll have to get it back.

He also gets sucked into a bizarre scheme at his upper-crust school, where a student claims she's being blackmailed. But it turns out to be something very different, pulling Cass and Sam into a clash with the faculty.

Finally, Agent Yulikova enlists Cass for a special mission to transform the bigoted Governor Patton. Suddenly he realizes that he's doing the same thing for the government that he would be doing for a mob family -- and the government's motives become increasingly suspect as the day approaches. The only way out of this situation is to make his own solution..

The Curse Workers trilogy is one of the most original urban fantasies in years, and "Black Heart" is a thoroughly satisfying end -- we've got moral greyness, impossible choices, corrupt government agents and even shadier mobsters.

There is absolutely nothing that I dislike about Black Heart or the rest of the Curse Workers series! Holly Black is one of my favorite authors. She hooked me with the Tithe series and gave me no room to wiggle off the line with her current film-noir-mixed-with-some-paranormal crime drama.

****Alert: Since this a review for book three of a series, it contains spoilers for anyone who hasn't read White Cat and Red Glove. If you find yourself in that unenviable position, you need to immediately step away from your computer, use the fastest means of transportation available to you, and get yourself to a bookstore so you can begin reading what is sure to become one of your favorite series. (If you're new to Holly Black, then you've got even more catching up to do. Don't miss out on Tithe, Valiant, and Ironside!)

Now back to the review. Cassel Sharpe is an eminently sympathetic character. He's a loyal friend/brother/son. He has a surprisingly strong sense of right and wrong, considering he was raised in a family of supernatural thieves and con artists. A family which lied to him and made him believe he was the black sheep without the power to alter people's memories, make them fall in love, or kill them with a single touch. He was the outcast since he wasn't a "Curse Worker". Just one problem: He is a curse worker. And not just any curse worker, but a transformation worker. He has the ability to turn you into anyone or anything he wants. So they used him to commit murders and to transform his best friend and only girl he ever loved into a cat, then erased his memory of it (White Cat). In attempt to set things straight his mom, the emotion worker, curses the girl to fall in love with him.

Holly Black has been one of my favorite authors for quite some time. Black Heart in no way disappointed me and Holly Black ended this trilogy on the perfect note. Although I can't help but hope there might be more books about Cassel and the Curse Workers.

Cassel is a very lost guy. He does not know what he should do with his life and it's getting to be that time. He is strong but vulnerable. His emotions are pretty close to the surface and it's hard for him to hide them. He is such an easy guy to relate to. Readers will love him even more in this final installment.

Sam, Daneca, Barron, and Lila all play pretty important roles in Black Heart. Sam is Cassel's wingman. He knows pretty much all his secrets and he is always there for him. Daneca is a bit mysterious but she is still a good friend to Cassel. Barron is a bit of a douche but he can't really help himself. He is better than he has been in the previous book though. Lila is a big mystery most of the book. She has two very different sides and they both come out in this book confusing both Cassel and the reader. However it's impossible not to love her because she is one kick ass female!

The plot takes off from the very first page and never once slows down. There are multiple stories interwoven together in Black Heart but they never once get confusing. Each story is so distinct but they all seem to tie together. Holly Black has an amazing skill at keeping readers entertained from beginning to end.

As far as I know Black Heart is the final book in the Curse Workers series. If it is, don't worry, all the questions are answered.
