This short story by Mr. Haggard is clearly written, engaging, and completed with mysticism integral to the plot. I do not understand why Haggard is not more often read, save for "She" and "King Solomon's Mines"; which of the total of three novels and this short story which I have read are my least favorite of his works. "Nadia the Lilly" is offered for free on the Amazon Kindle, my favorite Haggard worn of the four I have read. At the risk of sounding patronizing, and knowing these works are available for free elsewhere on other cites and devices, still I think Amazon's furnishing such works, formerly obscure, for free is a valuable service to the public.

This book, written in 1900, contains 1 story. The printed edition of this book has 59 pages, so you can easily read it in one to two hours. This book is in the public domain, so even if Amazon does not offer this book (in your area), you can still get it for free from several websites.

The story 'Black Heart and White Heart' is set in South Africa in the 1870's, in the time of King Cetywayo. It is a story of (in the words of the author:)"the courtship, trials and final union of a pair of Zulu lovers". But not after a lot of problems and betrayal by someone they trusted. The story is worth reading, it starts a bit slow, but it picks up after a few pages.

This is an old book, written in a time when most African countries were colonies, so do not be surprised to find words like 'natives' and 'the white man' in it, but the native population is portrayed with a lot of sympathy.

The author's note at the beginning of this book says that there are 3 stories in it, this is not correct: only the story 'Black Heart and White Heart' is recorded in this volume.

I ordered this for a friends kindle. She must have liked it as she is an avid reader and I've not heard otherwise. There are many kindle free editions of books and its nice, in this economy, to have access to reading material that is free. Thanks, Amazon, for this service..
