5.0 out of 5 stars A necessary resource for anyone interested in the history of blacks in America, June 26, 2007
This review is from: Black Heritage Sites: The North (v. 1) (Paperback)
Even though I am a student of history, I was surprised at the number of sites in the northern states with historic significance to black people. I live in a suburb of the city of Cedar Rapids, Iowa where there is a black history museum. I have visited that museum and examined all of the exhibits. I have recently read two books about the life of abolitionist John Brown that detailed his actions while he lived in Iowa. Yet, I did not know all of the black heritage sites in Iowa.
Sites in the following states are listed:

*) Alaska
*) California
*) Connecticut
*) Delaware
*) Idaho
*) Illinois
*) Indiana
*) Iowa
*) Maine
*) Massachusetts
*) Michigan
*) Minnesota
*) Montana
*) Nebraska
*) New Hampshire
*) New Jersey
*) New York
*) North Dakota
*) Ohio
*) Oregon
*) Pennsylvania
*) Rhode Island
*) South Dakota
*) Vermont
*) Washington
*) Wisconsin
*) Wyoming
*) Special feature: Canada

The reason why each site is considered a black heritage site is explained in detail. This includes the date established, address, telephone number, visiting hours, fees and the sources used to collect this information. If you have an interest in the history of blacks in the United States, then this is a book you should consult.
