Great guide for going to South Dakota with kids,
By South Dakota fan (IL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Black Hills Family Fun Guide: Explore the Black Hills, Badlands & Devils Tower (Paperback)
We just got back from spending over a week in the Badlands and Black Hills. I turned to this book over and over since we brought 3 kids under the age of 10. A great resource when you're looking for things to do with kids. You'll need a separate book for hotels, restaurants, etc. but this book was exactly what I needed to plan activities throughout the day that my kids wouldn't be totally bored with.

The Black Hills is our family's favorite vacation spot and this book was very helpful even though we have been there many times before. I learn something every time I pick it up. Well worth buying as you plan your time in the 'hills.

We just returned from South Dakota. We took our [...]grandson. The book was perfect for us. It gave us all the things that kids loved to do and we let him decide which ones he wanted to see. We had 5 days there and we used it all the time. We had bought another book but it was not nearly as good as this one.

I looked at several guidebooks for South Dakota before our vacation this summer. I choose this one and one other. This was the only guidebook I needed. It has all the important details, and very clear descriptions of the attractions. It's small enough to carry easily but large enough to tell you everything you need to know.

We just returned from a trip to South Dakota about a month ago. We took this book along. It was very useful in explaining the details of various places to visit. I would definitely recommend this book to a tourist visiting the area. And by the way, South Dakota (Mount Rushmore area) was wonderful. Make sure to spend some time in Custer State Park.

Boring,

Basic one paragraph summaries of various sights and scenes. If your a family or car camper going here for the weekend this might be fine. However if your like me and want to plan hikes, or get some fishing in don't buy it. There are better alternatives. This is aimed at the corny angle of the Black Hills, and features many things that I wish I didn't need to know. None of the private zoo's featured in this book are AZA certified, and as such have a number of shady event's in there past that they have not atoned to (Bear Country USA for example and their bear slaughter). Avoid this book and make your own path. Talk to the locals. Visit the various Chamber of Commerce that dot the area. You'll have more fun that way, and have better memories. The Black Hill's isn't a weekend trip, but a lifetime trip.

This book is really geared to the lower denominator in terms of what there is to do in the Black Hills. Not very much insight that you can't get from the tourist info you get from flyers. Should say more about how anti-family Deadwood has become and about the incredible natural resources that are in the area.
