Hi all, I have a neice who loves black history and the history of America. I would love to find her a book that is the exhaustive history of the United States or just Black American history for a 5th grader. Thanks in advance.

I don't know a comprehensive history, but a collection of African-American folktales that is really good is called The People Could Fly. It won the 1986 Coretta Scott King Award. I bought it for one of my young cousins and she really enjoyed it. I also read the Forbidden Schoolhouse which is about an abolitionist's struggle to open a school for African American women. I think a fifth grader could probably read it.
