Misinformation and Old Illustrations,

My 10-yr old brought this book home from the library. I browsed through it and was shocked to learn that "Astronauts in space do not feel this force [gravity] because they are too far from Earth." (Page 11)
Nonsense. Sir Isaac Newton figured out gravity and wrote about it in 1687. Search for "orbital cannon" and you can find his explanation that my 10-yr old was able to easily grasp. Misinformation like this sticks like peanut butter to the fresh brains of elementary school kids. Based on the wrong info on why astronauts orbit the earth and the out of date illustrations (some were fairly old when the book was published in '97), I could not recommend this book to anyone. I think it's a shame, as I encourage my kids to read. This could have been a good book, but it missed the mark. |
