Great concept that doesn't quite make it in the real world., November 28, 2010
This review is from: Black Box Innovations CSD8301 4GB Classified Secure Flash Drive (Personal Computers)
I bought this a couple of years ago after seeing a favorable review in the New York Times. I promptly bought one and signed up for the optional back up service.
It works okay on a PC, but I haven't figured out how to make it work on my Mac. When I bought the unit, I had a PC, but now that I am retired and have returned my PC to my former employer, I have no way to use this unit.
My second problem is that the indexing feature no longer works. If I try to run a search on one of the many security codes I have entered, the result doesn't coincide with what I have searched for. As a result, I have to scroll through all the entries to find the one I'm looking for.
I send an email to tech support to resolve the indexing problem, but never received a response.
Bottom line? I can't recommend this device, but with the right built in software that provides a re-indexing feature and support for the Mac, plus tech support, this product would fill a needed niche.
I gave it only two stars for ease of installation because it doesn't seem to work with a Mac. However, if the buyer has a PC, the installation is easy.
The hardware construction is fine, but the software doesn't work properly.

Great Device, just awkward to use, December 8, 2009
This review is from: Black Box Innovations CSD8301 4GB Classified Secure Flash Drive (Personal Computers)
This thing is nearly flawless. It has built-in hardware encryption for safe transportation of sensitive data. It's better than IRON key, because the IronKey needs software to unlock the device.
My only complaint is the lanyard attachment seems like a weak method of attaching to a key ring. The buttons are too easy to accidently press and the construction seems flimsy.
But if you need a device for TRANSPORTING sensitive data, this is the perfect device. Just don't be stupid and not have a backup of your data. It has hardware encryption, because flash drives are easily lost or stolen.....duh!

This is what i've been waiing for. Using software to encrypt my flash drives was too cumbersome. This unit is simple and secure.
