3.0 out of 5 stars Everything Except the Past, November 2, 2010
By
This review is from: Black Box Innovations SD8200 Secret Diary Flash Drive (Personal Computers)
I love the idea of this device. It worked great, i could type everything about my life and when i was done i could hide it easily or take it with me no problem. But my only problem was that it could be somewhat difficult to upload photos, adn you couldnt put any videos on it. that is something i really would have liked. But also, it was difficult to go back to your previous writings. you had to go page by page and it took a long time. and the little thing that is supposed to help you find pages didnt work at all. overall i think this is a great idea, but needs a lot of work.

My 11 year old daughter received this for Christmas, and so far is really enjoying it. She hasn't had any problems using it, and the directions were very clear.

4.0 out of 5 stars Journaling Anywhere....almost!, January 8, 2009
By
kate (New York, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Black Box Innovations SD8200 Secret Diary Flash Drive (Personal Computers)
Takeanyware.com's Secret Diary, using a usb drive, is an odd device. I have been journaling for over thirty years, and have reached the point where I have so many journals and books and less and less room for them. So, I thought this might be the answer to all the journal clutter. And, in some ways it is. The good news is that for those of us who have terrible penmanship, the typed notes on the Take are so much easier to read. Also, there are a variety of options on it that, for some older users may seem a bit adolescent, but I think this is their audience anyway. So, I put up with the options of having it ask a question of you, the answer to which is stored I do not know where. The mood swirls, good for some, not for me. The dream analysis is fun, just that. The real asset, for me, in having ths device, is that I do visit with others quite frequently, and this gives me a way to type in my thoughts without having to laboriously write in all that has me going or is on my mind at a particular time, especially with the world and all relationships being so complicated. You must call Takeanyware.com to find out how to use this device. The instructions with it are almost useless, unless you have some way of guessing what happens when you are finished writing. Early on I lost some info., but I was testing it as a device for me, so I did not mind...but what about my real info? I learned from the company that for a price of $20+ dollars a year, they will back up all of your writing on their server. If you lose the device, they charge you to have all of the backed up information put onto another Take diary and they send you the new one with all of the information on it. There is no place you can sign into on their site to read notes you have written. Also, I like to write on trains, buses, etc...and this device does not allow for that because you need access to a usb drive to write here. What to do? I think I will carry another journal in my bag and, on those occasions where I do not have usb access, I will write, the old-fashioned way. However, it it difficult to go back to a thought or what you were working on before you last closed the Take diary. That is something to consider, and I am considering it. Also, often, I like to go back and look up something from the past. With my journals, which are catalogued, I can pick up anyone from the time I think is appropriate, and simply browse through it to see if it is the one I'm looking for. The idea of paging back, one page at a time, just to see if info is where I think it is sounds as boring as it must be time consuming. I think Secret Diary is more useful for adolescents who want to sit up late writing about their latest woes, that for a serious journalis like myself. In fact, I gave myself one month to see what it was like, keeping simultaneous written and Take journal notes. I think I am going to give up the Take Secret Diary and go back to writing. Now I am back to my old problem of storing all of these journals. I'll have to think of something, but there is something wonderful and almost mystical about going back to a time when you wrote differently, thought differently and much was captured by the spontaneous action of the mind, heart and hand. Some of that is lost here. I rate it three stars because I think it is a good start on a way to help journalists collect their archives and keep them in easy-to-reach small places. I know this is marked four stars, I couldn't get back to make it three starts, but that is what I want to rate it as.
