Product Description

In a world where death can strike at any time, a renegade surgeon known as Black Jack operates outside the law, performing medical miracles of an almost paranormal nature. A madman, a genius and a mercenary, Black Jack has the power to cheat death itself…for a terrible price!

Amazon.com

Osamu Tezuka's popular manga Black Jack ran from 1973 to 1978, and was made into both animated and live-action features; Infection presents the first two installments of a nine-part OVA from 1996. Kuroh Hazama, a.k.a. Black Jack, is a brilliant but unlicensed physician specializing in diseases of the rich. For multimillion dollar fees, he performs medical miracles, usually assisted by a young woman who looks like a toddler. Jack discovers the virus that causes Kimaira, a mysterious plague that has reduced a billionaire industrialist to a pain-wracked skeleton. In a northern city, he rescues the teenage victims of a hospital owner linked to a drug cartel. Director Osamu Dezaki uses very limited visuals to present Black Jack's adventures, with still images taking the place of reaction shots and short scenes. (Rated 13 and older, but more appropriate for viewers over 16: nudity, grotesque imagery, alcohol, tobacco and drug use, sexual situations) --Charles Solomon

Medical TV shows are not a foreign concept, but a medical anime series is quite rare. Black Jack is an anime about the world's greatest unlicensed doctor, who will help patients, but for a high price. This series of Black Jack is actually a ten part OVA series; this DVD contains episodes 1 and 2, so anyone should start here. It really doesn't matter what episode you start with (I actually started on the 5th.) Each episode is self contained, but not in a bad way like in some anime.

Black Jack is created by the revered manga artist, Osamu Tezuka, who created Astro Boy, Kimba, Metropolis, and many others. The OVA series is directed by Osamu Dezaki, who is known for his unique art style which includes freeze frames and split screens (kind of like the TV show, 24.) This series of episodes makes Black Jack look more mature and darker than the manga, which is perfectly fine.

The first episode features Black Jack and his young assistant, Pinoko, helping a dying old man from a mysterious disease. The old man must drink numerous liters of water each day to ease the pain, but then the water erupts out of the man. Black Jack is baffled, but that won't stop him. We then learn that the old man's young wife knows Black Jack from the past; he performed plastic surgery on her before. There is also a small village nearby with people also suffering from the same illness. How and will Black Jack be able to help this situation? You will have to watch to find out.

The second episode features Black Jack helping a young girl on a chance encounter. One year later he encounters the same girl, but two of her friends are dead and one is in the hospital.

Because I've purchased all of the Black Jack anime that one can get their hands on I cannot write a review for all of them. Overall I am very pleased with every title; all of them arrived well packaged, no scratches or shipping problems, exactly as described. The stories I've watched several times an love them each time. The impact of multiple genres inside the Black Jack titles is a great mix of horror, drama, comedy, suspense and more - each with their own storyline, well followed and ending perfectly. Not a lot of "left in the dark" from the "BJ" series / OVAs, etc. Highly recommended to any anime watcher, though most I believe should be over 13 at least.

I am 15 years old and a fan of classic anime. I am IN LOVE with Black Jack. I had already seen the 2004 anime with the intro song "Gekkouka". I hesitated to watch the OVA at first. (I have no idea why) Thanks to the brilliant service of the Anime corner Store, this DVD arrived in perfect quality. It was beautifully packaged and delivered quickly too. I watched it in Japanese because, to me, the language adds to the greatness of the series. I was instantly blown away. This OVA is a sophisticated masterpiece with dramatic medical scenes and a lot of suspense. It's way more epic than the 2004 anime. The opening theme "Just Before the Sunrise" became my new favorite anime intro from the first time I heard it. The lyrics make Black Jack seem coldhearted, but in fact he is the opposite of this. In the OVA, Black Jack has a more kind and gentle personality, even a romantic side. I was shocked when he kissed the young girl at the end of the second episode. I just know I have to watch the rest of this series. The OVA is so classy, so well made. Again, a masterpiece. Why didn't I watch this sooner? I'll never know.

From a 70s manga with an 80s look. I found the story itself to be interesting, the characters are also very interesting, especially the doctor. The colors & details are vibrent & refreshing. Any art student could just gawk at the details & scenery & feel placid. After watching this, I can see why it's lasted so long in popularity in Japan & now I want to see & read all of Black Jack.

In a world where the grim reaper can strike at any time, a brilliant renegade surgeon known only as Black Jack operates outside the law. For the rich and dying, he performs miracles of a macabre medical nature. Black Jack can cheat death.
