5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Listening
The legendary sdvertising campaign for this album featured a carichature of a pissed-off black kangaroo, standing on a pile of carnage whilst holding a smoking machine gun.

That's a pretty good visual approximation of what goes on musically in Peter Kaukonen's "Black Kangaroo."

2.0 out of 5 stars Jorma Kaukonen in a bad day
There is just one good song on this album: the song "THAT'S A GOOD QUESTION", the others are just an ugly copy of Jimi Hendrix stile of playing, and the voice sucks like the hell.
This album is not a very good one: Peter Kaukonen is known just because of his brother Jorma, not because of is talent.
He has no style, no rithm feel and his guitar sound is...

But for every bit of balls-out, Harley-fueled riffage, there are equal parts of shimmering acoustic brilliance... Even a splash of heavy metal psychedelia.

In the 35 years or so since this album was first unleashed, its musical dexterity and variety has steadily grown a rabid cult following. And rightfully so. The meticulously crafted songs and production hold up remarkably well as this beautifully remastered, long overdue CD reissue will attest.

Prior reviews here make much of Peter's connection with the Airplane. But listeners will find this record has more in common with post-Hendrix hard rockers like Mountain, Johnny Winter or Robin Trower. (Jefferson Airplane did, in fact, cover "Up Or Down," but that version is as pale as, er well, an albino kangaroo next to this authoritative recording)

I hit on this album in 1972?? through reading a review. Loved it. Bought Artur Lee- Vindicator at same time. Unusual haunting (bluesy?)songs good (Hendrixy) style guitar. Peter is Jorma's (Jeff Airplane)brother. Worth a listen-Joey Covington on drums.Great artwork on sleeve!!
Has he done anything since?? let me know pblakey33@hotmail.com

He has no style, no rithm feel and his guitar sound is always dirty, both electric and acoustic.

1.0 out of 5 stars Jorma Lite At Best, November 5, 2008
This review is from: Black Kangaroo (Audio CD)
For what it's worth, the album is just average at best. Pete is like a really weak version of his brother Jorma on a bad day. It's ok, but I'd much rather hear Hoppkorv or any of Hot Tuna's mid 70s stuff ANYDAY. Or Jorma's 70s solo material.

Funny how Peter never recorded another solo album after this one, at least on any kind of major label. Sure says alot about his (lack of) talent. Riding on his brother's legend and little more.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pay No Attention To The Idiot's Review Below This One, March 19, 2006
I wonder why it is that everyone's an expert on what is and what isn't a bootleg. AND I wonder why they think they are some higher authority, as if ONLY THEY know what's up. First off, the term bootleg is WAY overused, and I doubt the majority of listeners really know what a bootleg is anymore anyway. AND if you wanna get technical about things, Peter Kaukonen himself is a bootlegger, by illegally offering for sale downloads of the album on his site. If that isn't the case, then why doesn't he just sell the CD, or at least address the issue with actual proof that he is selling a legal download, and for that matter legal proof that this listing is a bootleg?

For what it's worth, the album is just average anyway. Pete is like a really weak version of Jorma on a bad day. It's ok, but I'd much rather hear Hoppkorv or any of Hot Tuna's mid 70s stuff ANYDAY. Or Jorma's 70s solo material.

Let's hope the dust clears out of his head long enough to LEGALLY pursue getting proper authorization to release his precious album, as if ANYONE would want to hear it. Maybe a few homeless people?

I give the album maybe a 2, only because of the last name. As for the idiot responsible for the 'review' below, A BOOT TO THE HEAD to quote the Frantics album ha ha

1.0 out of 5 stars THIS IS A BOOTLEG, DO NOT BUY!!, February 14, 2006
This is a bootleg!! Do not buy from this person. They are selling illegal recordings. If you want to buy this item the only way to buy it legitimately is from the artist himself. Go to PeterKaukonen.com and purchase this item from his web site. If you do not buy it this way it is a bootleg and therefore illegal to sell and the artist receives no money and criminals like this seller get richer.
