Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 9-up. Although this is identified as volume one in the Black Leopard graphic-novel saga, readers are plunged into a story that has already started. To bring readers up to speed, background is given at the beginning along with the relationship chart. The story builds a world of intrigue and action around the title character, Black Leopard, a top-notch agent trained to be the best. In this adventure, Leopard must regain his sword, then head to Tokyo to rescue his girlfriend, Lily, while dealing with warrior rival Edge Sanbu. This rock 'em, sock 'em Chinese manga is the graphic-novel equivalent of a Hong Kong action flick. There's just a touch of bad language and a lot of showy violence, but there's little true gore. The story falters a little in places, mainly because of translation difficulties, but flaws are more than redeemed by the wonderful art. Crisp and elegant line work is offset by a subdued, almost delicate use of color. With its high-tension emotion and a hero who can do almost anything, Black Leopard will attract an enthusiastic audience of comics fans. Tina Coleman
