Based on a manga by Go Nagai, this anachronistic gorefest is set in 1580, when Oda Nobunaga united Japan under what would later become the Tokugawa Shogunate. In Black Lion, Nobunaga attacks his foes with guns, missiles, lasers, bombs--and the "immortal" warrior Ginnai Doma (actually a murderous cyborg). He's pitted against Shishimura (a look-alike for Ryo in Ronin Warriors), who's out to avenge his friends' deaths. On the umpteenth try, he slices Doma in half, which causes the robot's atomic pile to explode. Shishimura and his friends are saved from the blast by an unexplained corps of extraterrestrials. Shishimura proclaims himself "the Black Lion" in an ending that suggests the filmmakers intended to continue his adventures. Viewers willing to overlook the blood and gore will find Black Lion is often unintentionally hilarious. (Rated 15 and older: graphic violence, grotesque imagery, profanity) --Charles Solomon

Product Description

From Go Nagai, creator of Devilman and Cutey Honey, comes a savage tale of betrayal, vengeance and other-worldly forces. The year is 1580 and Nobunaga Oda is working to consolidate his power over Japan. In his army are weapons of great destructive power: rapid fire machine guns, lasers, missiles and, most frightening of all, the reputedly immortal ninja Ginnai Doma. Like a sentence of divine wrath he hunts down and destroys dissident monks, ninjas and others, wherever they may be. With the clans on the brink of destruction, a single ninja accepts the impossible task: kill the immortal Ginnai.

Great anime! August 1, 2005
By Lansing
Format:DVD
This anime is one of the best action oav animes i've seen with alot of gore, and the way people think, talk, and move is realistic.

Alot of people are saying why is there robots in the 1500s with guns.. Well that answer is simple, there is an old man that is the leader of the upper class ninja that had a computer that was asking "the time department for help". As he was typing on his computer it showed areas of the world. He even said that "the warlord/ninja killer has things that don't belong to this time, I must talk to the time department for assistence".

Hope that helps confussion.

Its a great anime, really good quality for being an anime from "1989"

This is a smart and really neat piece of japanimation. The story is of Shishimaru of the Iga ninja prefecture in 1590 Japan.lord Nobunaga Oda(ancient japanese warord)has destroyed most of the prefectures around the nation of Japan.i know what you are thinking typical ninja medival samurai stuff.Well...you are right,but..Lord Nobunaga's army has the most technological and out of this world military force thte world has ever seen, far greater then our technology today. Not only this he has allied himself with the immortal ninja killer Ginnai Doma, whom no one can destroy.Shishimaru's iga ninja squad has been wiped out by this evil monster of a man and he know has made killing Ginnai personal! This is a good anime with plenty of violence for the ultimate anime fan or those who have started watching it.

Ok but fun to watch July 11, 2001
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
This movie is OK. It isn't the greatest anime I've ever seen but it by far isn't the worst anime I have seen. First of all it is REALLY dopey. It's about a ninja named Shishimaru who is seeking revenge on an "imortal ninja killer" named Ginnai Doma who killed one of Shishimaru's friends and nearly killed him. This movie is good in the sense that it is just a simple, fun movie to watch on a rainy day or if you have nothing else to do. Be warned though... it has the WORST ending to any movie I have ever seen, anime or not. The animation is good sometimes but pretty bad most of the time. It is alittle confusing in the sense that it takes place in the 1500's and there are robots(!) that kill ninjas and the like. What is confusing about that is that there is absolutly no explaination of how they got here. All they say is that the leader of the robots and people with guns and tanks "shouldn't have them." So, if you are looking for an alright anime that is fun to watch (if you dont take it seriously that is) then I recommend it. If you aren't sure if it is for you then rent it before you buy it, so you dont waste money. If you do like this I would also recommend anything dragon ball z (i dont care for it THAT much), or ninja scroll or Blood Reign: Curse of the Yoma.

Be absolutely sure to watch it dubbed.
And why, you might ask? Because it is the absolute WORST dub I have heard... ever. And man, that is saying something, after watching Yotoden, Lost Universe, and Crest Of The Stars. Read more
