Editorial Reviews

Review

New Haven Advocate writes: The book is full of practical suggestions for what people can do to make those interactions smoother, and it's delivered in zippy, street-smart anecdotes, like this one:
Time after time, writes Abdussabur, he's seen relatives "earn their way into a nice shining pair of handcuffs trying to so-call rescue some young Black or Hispanic/Latino male from being arrested. Understand this! If a police officer tells you that you're under arrest, then there is no negotiation."
Emma Khadija Jones, J.D., Founder of The MALIK Organization, Inc. writes:
"This is one of the best collection of "dos and don'ts" written by a police officer for black males who may come in contact with law enforcement. It is a useful tool for motorists regardless of race, gender, or socio-economic status. If you are going to drive in America, this is a must read starting point!"

Product Description

When a police officer pulls over a male African American driver, the result is usually an arrest. In most cases, the charges have nothing to do with motor vehicle violations, and everything to do with racial profiling, and how the driver conducts himself. A Black Man's Guide to Law Enforcement in America tells you everything you need to know about dealing with racial bias among those bound to serve and protect. You'll learn...
  • how to avoid getting stopped in the first place
  • what to say when questioned, and how to say it
  • what you'll need to prepare for a court case
  • how to handle yourself in court
  • ...and much more
Know the law, and know how to protect yourself. Armed with the information from this guide, you'll have a far better chance of emerging unscathed when "driving while black."

More About the Author

Shafiq R.F. Abdussabur is a law enforcement officer in Connecticut with over 15 years of community-based police training and experience. In January 2007, Abdussabur was appointed coordinator and program writer of the New Haven Street Outreach Workers Program, a proactive social development program aimed at reducing violent crime among youth and young adults. Within its first five months, New Haven posted an 86 percent reduction in homicides. During that two-year period, Abdussabur served as the chief executive officer for the New Haven Police Department under Police Chief Francisco Ortiz Jr. In June of 2008, both CTRIBAT Institute For Social Development Inc. and the New Haven Street Outreach Workers Program were awarded the All-American City Award in Tampa, Florida.

In a year when shootings left New Haveners feeling despair about how to address youth violence, Dixwell beat cop Shafiq Abdussabur offered inspiration. How he got to be a cop -- and in a position to make a difference -offers another inspiring tale, about how to build a true "community policing" force. In 2006, Shafiq was recognized as "Man Of The Year" the New Haven Independent.

As an author and artist, Shafiq uses his creative skills and talents to forge stronger bonds between police, educators and the urban community. The results of his "works in action" are best seen in the historical Dixwell Avenue area or New Haven. Mike Morand, Associate Vice President of Yale University Office of New Haven and State Affairs, coined him as the "Nike of urban development."

He was recently elected as Chairman/CEO of the National Association of Black Law Enforcement Officers,Inc. - NABLEO
