This is good stuff, but I'm a little confused by the decision to put this out with the name "My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult" on it (was it Ryko's decision?). The mythos behind this album is that it wasn't supposed to be released as a Thrill Kill Kult album. The name of the band was going to be "Gay Black & Married", with the album being titled "Euro-Freak". That would have been a lot cooler than issuing it as a TKK album, which would make this the most officially "disco" thing they ever did. More instrumental than most TKK releases, the tracks here without vox sort of run together, but when Groovie Mann is featured, it's a lot of fun. His sleazy vocals fit the euro-disco mold quite nicely.

Don't let the word "disco" in the "official" review scare you. This album is full of sexy/funky/dancy/groovy energy! Think "Disko Fleshpot" off "13 Above the Night", but with a more layered sound. And they keep the energy through the whole album! While I really dig the first track ("Do You Wanna Get Funky With Me") most, I can't really say there are any "misses" here.

you are driving late at night, palm trees pass you, you are in a pink convertible on your way to an all night dance club. you are wearing polyester and yet a lot is on your mind. you wanna dance, you wanna romance, you wanna party, you wanna be free...this album feels like that.
every album this band does is slightly or sometimes very different than the previous. and they do it all so well. this is an AMAZING disco/house album with thrill kill's unique elements thrown in for good measure. the melodies are great for every song the sounds are great for every song the beats are great for every song makes you wanna dance and it makes you wanna just sit and listen finally, a piece of music that reminds me of great dance music from the 70s...but better. because it takes the best of house music and the best ideas from Thrill Kill as well. palm tree California disco love!!! buy this

I think it can be summed up with this: If you like TKK for albums like Confessions, then you may hate this one. If you like Sexplosion, you may be able to tolerate GB&M but it is < half as good. I have never put a disk in from TKK and not loved it, but this one.............?

Not the best TKK, but enjoyable,

Gay Black & Married is almost what you'd expect TKK to release - a sleazy disco album about sex and drugs, right? This one delivers there - yet it has a feel at times that it was too forced, not well thought out enough.
In my opinion, some of these songs go on entirely too long and get redundant which takes away from the enjoyment. A great track which I find myself repeating is "One Night Stand", a track that sounds completely from the 1980's but has an awesome ebb and flow of synths and dance rhythms, with no vocals. A must for die hard fans but not essential.

Finally a studio album, enough of the remixes and re-releases. I've been waiting a long time for a new studio album from TKK. I've read reviews that say it's a disco album and fans won't like it. I say BULL. If you like the TKK, you will like this disc. Yes it has a disco sound on some songs, but TKK has used that sound before. The music is great and I love it. Is it as good as "13 above the night" or "Sexplosion"?, no, but there is nothing else that sounds even close to this.

Enough already!,

For god's sake, this is too much. Since the TKK's last album of new material, they've released no less than three -- count'em, THREE -- remix projects of varying quality, numerous reissues of past material, and a best of compilation. Now some four years since their last stab at originality, the best they can muster is the release of "Gay Black and Married," an archived project recorded a decade ago. The time has come and gone...long, long gone...for a release of *new* material. Are you listening, TKK?
Maybe I wouldn't be so frustrated with these guys if "Gay Black & Married" was a better disc. While it's not terrible, it is easy to see why it has languished on a shelf for the last ten years: it's just not that good. Coming from a band that loves to confound expectations and frequently reinvents itself with new sounds & styles, this release sadly sounds exactly like you'd expect - retro disco grooves, some fairly tame sexy samples, a repetitive beat, and nothing we haven't heard before. Basically, it's just "Sexplosion!" all over again, only not as good and certainly not as daring. When they put a little effort into their craft the TKK can be a great and fearlessly creative band (one of my favourites of all time as a matter of fact) and while I don't want to give them a bad review it has to be pointed out that this disc is a lacklustre effort that should have remained on the shelf. Or at least they could have released this project sometime after an album of new material and not on the heels of the recent overdose of remixed and repackaged stuff. Get off your asses, TKK, and remind us why we love you!

Great CD for a disco themed party!,
This review is from: Gay Black & Married (Audio CD)
My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult have released their much anticipated disco album Gay, Black and Married. The album has been considered "lost" for years. The group originally planned to release it close to a decade ago and now Rykodisc has released the disc. This disco CD is the funkiest CD's released this year. "Euro-Freak Hustle," will get any party started. The CD is refreshing from start to finish and the songs really capture the sound and feel of the late 70's disco era to a tee. "Freaky Fever" is a funky song that tells listeners to "shake that thang." "One Night Stand" is a hypnotic dance track. The songs are all original songs from Thrill Kill Cult with the exception of "Do You Wanna Get Funky With Me," which is a remake of Peter Brown's 1977 classic. From start to finish this is an awesome disco album and if you plan on having a 70's themed party this is one CD you should pick up.

Catchy but sometimes annoying.,

After hearing about this long lost MLWTTKK disco album, I went and picked up "Gay, Black and Married" and upon listening to it, have mixed feelings. While this is a catchy cd with tracks that will make you want to get up and dance, certain elements are a big disappointment. I like MLWTTKK because of their voice/movie samples that they so ingeniously incorporate in their songs. In that respect, this album does not disappoint. "One Nite Stand" has a good hard driving house beat with cool manipulation of voice samples. However, that meandering clarinet synth used in "Euro-Freak Hustle" is aggrevating. It takes a very hip gay disco album and turns it into cheese.
If you're like me, you'll find this disc has some enjoyable moments, but just as it's getting good, Buzz and Groovie turn it into cheesy gay "Blue Oyster Bar" music. A series of buildups and letdowns. |
