Track in a bottle, April 14, 2009
This review is from: Black Metallic (MP3 Download)
This is one of those great flashback tunes from the British shoegazer movement of the early/mid 1990's. Great wash of sound, simple hooks, chorus, theme. I hate to use the word "perfection" but Black Metallic captures the mood so well from that era, it's hard not to put it on a pedestal.
One departure this song holds from most shoegazer rock was the fact that you could actually hear and understand Rob's lyrics. Most of the stuff from that era (Lush, Slowdive) had vocals pretty far back in the mix; as if the sound of the track was more important than the words. This isn't a bad thing, but was a common trait of most tunes that fell into that subgenre.
Great tune, and a great example of the era.
