4.0 out of 5 stars A useful retrieving tool
The grappling hook is sturdy enough to pull a large limb from the water. It's folding mechanism makes it more convient to store, but weakens it for really heavy pulling.

1.0 out of 5 stars WARNING!
Take note, kiddies: mine *broke*. Luckily, it did not break completely mid-climb, but had cracked most of the way through under about 180 pounds of weight--enough that afterward it fell apart very easily. Although above it says "rated for 800 pounds," another seller says "not for climbing."

If you really want to be an urban ninja, get a real grappling hook...

1.0 out of 5 stars Dangerously Weak!!, June 2, 2009
This review is from: Black Ninja Folding Grappling Hook W/ 33 Foot Rope (Misc.)
"Rated to 800lbs." Not a chance! I threw it into a tree (about 10 feet up), it fell back to the ground, and one of the hooks bent. I bent it back, threw it back into the tree and pulled my 185lb body up the rope. Got to the top and the hook was now bent severely in the other direction. The next time it hit the ground (soft earth and grass), the screw top tip (which allows the collapse) bent so much it can no longer be collapsed. At this point, I could easily break the hooks off with a couple of strong tweaks of my hands. Judging by other reviews, and the opinion of the seller, it may be that mine is faulty. However my seller won't refund, because he says I broke it with "misuse." I guess letting it hit the grass from 10 feet up is misuse of a grappling hook. He then eventually admits that this is more of a "collector" item than a functional tool. DON'T EXPECT TO CLIMB SAFELY WITH THIS PRODUCT. It would be great for yanking things back to you, but don't stake your life on the 800lb rating. For my money, this product is nearly garbage.

5.0 out of 5 stars For the frugal, urban crimefighter, October 1, 2008

My experience with the product is limited to about 3 weeks of fairly intense use. I ordered this as a vital component of my ninja training, and it arrived rapidly and in discreet packaging. So far it has proven to be fairly sturdy and reliable. Build quality is good and is has held up well under regular use, though I would not place more than 200 lbs of load on the provided rope. I have used this to scale all sorts of urban environments in security and stealth, and the collapsible nature of the product allows it to fit comfortably on my utility belt. Once my training is complete, I fully expect this will be an invaluable piece of equipment in my one man crusade against crime. Evildoers beware!

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good Quality, January 3, 2007
This review is from: Black Ninja Folding Grappling Hook W/ 33 Foot Rope (Misc.)
I bought this, not for scaling buildings, etc. but to grapple into trees and help guide them as I cut them down along my drive & fence line. I really wish I'd bought this thing years ago!!
It is made strong and well. It has also saved me hours of working on extension ladders attaching cables. The grappling hook also is handy guiding large, high limbs that need to be pruned away from property lines and other obsticles.
If you do much tree trimming/removal and can't afford professionals... well, plan your work carefully and plan on getting this grappling hook. It sure beats risking a fall of an extension ladder!

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful Tool, October 27, 2007

Using it to help remove some tree from between 2 houses.
Throwing the hook into limbs, a friend pulls on the rope, while I cut it.
This way, we can control where it falls.
Might find other uses in the future.

No it's not titanium alloy or military-grade aircraft aluminum, but it works. The rope is garbage for climbing but you can use it for something else, and I got some good rope for pretty cheap at Home Depot. This hook works well--just don't throw it too hard against a hard surface as it may bend a bit. If you're going to be doing toss-and-climb with it, I recommend wrapping the hooks in a layer of cloth so as to reduce the shock on the hook if it makes a sharp impact (and to reduce noise!)

All in all, a good, cheap, fun little tool. I've scaled a few different buildings with it. I do recommend tying 'rungs' every 2 feet or so in your climbing rope to make it easier to climb.

5.0 out of 5 stars I believe that you are ninja too..., March 20, 2007
This review is from: Black Ninja Folding Grappling Hook W/ 33 Foot Rope (Misc.)
This thing might look like junk in the pictures you see up here, but I assure you it's not. It's really quite sturdy, and a lot of fun to get in trouble with... not that that's what you use it for. Anyway it's neat, and it's great, buy one.
