This book was intriguing from the start. It's the story of the Aleph Null, he who can control Black Numbers. The author takes us from the powerful Oblate and its servant, the Korpor, to the journey of a young man on his way to find his destiny. The friends and enemies he finds along the way come to life in the pages of this novel; you can feel the emotion, the pain, the sorrow, the love. The premise of the power of numbers is not a new one, but never have I read anything that brings it to life with such clarity and such power. There are many unexpected twists and turns in this story, and I loved every one of them. Luckily there's a second book in the series - Blood Numbers - which is good, because I was sure left wanting more. Read Black Numbers, you will be amazed at the author's portrayal of the power of numbers, and just might make you want to go back and study equations again!

5.0 out of 5 stars amazingly original January 18, 2012

Dean Lappi may soon be a well-known name! I was directed toward this book by an acquaintance, and began reading ,expecting to be disappointed by just another run-of -the-mill fantasy with wizards, witches, wands and warriors. Instead, what I found is probably the most inventive and intriguing world I've encountered in years!! I gave this book a 5 star rating for its concept and the way I was pulled into the narrative.
My only criticism is that I would like to have had a more fleshed out picture of this fascinating world, more detail and description, but I tend to like "thick" and detailed writing styles, so this is pbobably just my own preferences speaking.
I'll be looking forward to the sequel and further surprises.

5.0 out of 5 stars An original work of imagination December 7, 2011

We've all read our share of mystical, magical works which invariably left us with the thought, 'Tolkienesque'... Well, thank you, Mr. Lappi, for breaking that mold and writing something original which not once reminded me of Hobbits, Ents or Orcs. Lappi's characters, for the most part, come across as human, perhaps of different species, but human nonetheless. His descriptions of working with numbers, in a magical sense, are successful to the point of being visible such that one might see them on a movie screen. The same holds true of the scenery he portrays, be it in the forests or on the muddy city streets of the fictional world he's created in 'Black Numbers'. This has all been accomplished with a solid writing style. If I had anything to criticize, it would be that the story does not end at the end. This said, I'm pleased to know Lappi apparently agrees as there is a forthcoming sequel. I would describe 'Black Numbers' as a worthy piece of reading entertainment indeed.
