5.0 out of 5 stars BOA - RAH
Hey Y'all - this is one Jim Dandy of a DVD !! Black Oak strut their hot+nasty stuff thru some of their best songs.Having seen this band almost a dozen times,I really feel that was the best line-up of the band.Jimmy Henderson was one talented kid! Check out the slide in "Jailbait".He and Stanley "Goober" Knight trade some great licks.Well worth the price of admission...

3.0 out of 5 stars This is great no doubt but ,
......if you have "the first 30 years" DVD you don't need this one. This is the same complete performance that's on there + there's actually more stuff on "the first 30 years". When are they going to release: all the Kirshners stuff, all The ABC In Concert stuff (including Cal.Jam 1), and any other BOA stuff that might be floating around ??? Inquring rockers wanna know...

Most youngsters that I've tried to turn on to BOA just don't get them. I tell them,"you had to have been there and seen'em live back then"....I've been a fan for over 1/2 my life !

Negatives would be 1.too short(this may have been a warm-up show for another band) 2.too dark(the large RAH stage has only 3 light towers,no overhead row) 3.No Ruby Starr.

The performance outweighs the negatives by far. Also, the 2 photo galleries are excellent. They feature lots of both the extremely photogenic Ruby Starr and Harvey Jett, the original guitarist who left the band after his conversion to Born-Again Christianity.A MUST BUY for any BOA fan!!

4.0 out of 5 stars BLACK OAK ARKANSAS "Live at Royal Albert Hall" DVD, December 2, 2008
THIS IS VINTAGE BLACKOAK ARKANSAS THAT WAS FILMED AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL IN ENGLAND BACK IN THE 1970'S. JIM DANDY (THE LEAD MAN), STRUTS AROUND IN HIS TIGHT, BELL BOTTOM PANTS, WITH HIS SHIRT OFF. IT SEEMS A LITTLE AWKWARD NOW, BUT I GUESS IT WAS A TURN ON FOR THE WOMEN, BACK IN THE 70'S. ANYWAY, HE IS A GOOD FRONTMAN, AND A GREAT LEAD SINGER, AND ENTERTAINER.

The DVD begins with an introduction by Jim Dandy "Lord Have Mercy on My Soul", and then the rest of the songs are as follows:

"Hey Y'all"

"Back Door Man" (He introduces the song by saying that back home in Arkansas, when the men are working in the fields, there's a back door man going around and getting it on with their women).

"Hot and Nasty" (that's what they call Jim Dandy).

"Hot Rod"

"Mutants of the Monster"

"Taxman" (according to Jim nobody wants to work for the tax man).

"Jim Dandy" (THIS IS THEIR CLASSIC "JIM DANDY TO THE RESCUE" - ITS A GREAT ONE ABOUT JIM DANDY COMING TO THE RESUE OF A "LITTLE GIRL" CRYING - JIM DANDY CAME TO HER RESUE, HE COULDN'T STAND TO SEE A "LITTLE GIRL" CRY, SO JIM DANDY DIDN'T WASTE NO TIME!!!).(GO JIM DANDY!!! GO JIM DANDY!!).

"Jail Bait"

IT ONLY HAS A RUNNING TIME OF APPROX.42 MINUTES, BUT IT IS GOOD ENTERTAINMENT. AT ONE TIME JIM DANDY EVEN USES A "WASHBOARD" TO MAKE MUSIC,WHICH ADDS TO THE "ARKANSAS" MYSTIC. IT DOES HAVE SOME SLIGHT BONUS MATERIAL. OVERALL, I WOULD SAY THIS IS AN ENJOYABLE CONCERT TO WATCH. THE BAND IS GREAT, THEY PERFORM GREAT GUITAR WORK. BASED ON THE ABOVE, I DO RECOMMEND THIS CONCERT DVD, IT IS GREAT VINTAGE BLACKOAK ARKANSAS PERFORMING AT THEIR BEST!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars For fans of BOA and Guns & Roses, et. al., July 11, 2007
This review is from: Black Oak Arkansas: Live At Royal Albe (DVD)
I guess today they call it Grunge and Roll, something along those lines. This is raw, guitar driven, '70s Southern R & R, fronted by Jim Dandy, here tearing up the stage overseas. Yes, his vocal range was maybe a half an octave, and his bump-and-grind thing might not appeal to the Rock sophisticates, but the kids eat up the A & R, especially the best cover of "Taxman" ever done, "Back Door Man", with a great spoken intro. by JD, "Jail Bait", and the expected themesong "Jim Dandy". This number makes one recall the beautiful Ruby Starr's harmony on other occasions - sadly, she's not present.

The concert is prefaced by a moving philosophical statement by the Jim, a compelling contrast in tone to the voice-box shattering tones to follow.

Sound is okay to me; lighting is way down, though. If the crowd was captured more vividly, we'd get more of a sense of the interactive event it really was.

[Note: back in the '70s the "Confederate" flag was displayed on the TV Show, The Dukes Of Hazzard, and according to a still picture in the Features here, on stage with this group. I don't know the context, or the group's explanation].

It was great to see Black Oak Arkansas again. Last time I saw them was in the 70's. On the bill with Grand Funk Railroad. It was great to see them grind it out again. Great!!!!
