Book Description

The thing about cancer is it’s hard to prove somebody gave it to you on purpose—but Chloe Taylor can prove it. In fact, she proves it for a living. She sues oil refineries that would rather save a buck than comply with safety regulations designed to do important things like, you know, keep people alive.

Chloe had a successful career until circumstances forced her to move to the bass-ackwards town of Kettle, Texas (human population: 4,000; gun population: 34,356). Big Oil industry giant PetroPlex employs half of Kettle’s population, and there’s no question the judge in the town’s got oil stains on his hands. It’s no wonder she’s been on a losing streak lately. She suspects she’s been litigating on an uneven playing field, but when her star expert witness turns up dead less than 48 hours before a make-or break hearing, she knows.

What she doesn’t know is the key piece of information that got her expert killed. It turns out PetroPlex is harboring a shocking secret—one that has the potential to skyrocket gasoline prices, spark an energy market meltdown, and trigger riots, chaos, death, and destruction on a global scale. Chloe must discover the secret and expose the villains before she is permanently silenced, all while juggling a troublesome ex-fiancé and a tantalizing new flame along the way.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is on the free list? June 10, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I read this book a few months back and was impressed by how well the author wrote, even if I didn't agree entirely with her view on the topic. What I felt about the point of the story did not detract from how well it was written and how easy it was to read. Now that I see it is on the free title listing, I felt I must write a review. It is a good story that you will enjoy and if you search out the good free books, this one is one. I paid for my copy and would again, but since you can get it for free right now, snatch it up.

4.0 out of 5 stars For readers of John Grisham May 17, 2012
By H. Tjoa
Format:Kindle Edition
For all those who love John Grisham type thrillers, here's one with a hot red-haired attorney working on an oil pollution case which turns out to be much more. She is also running away from a womanizing ex-fiance and head-long into the arms of a too-good-to-be-true hunk of a cop. The plot is convoluted, the action is almost non-stop, and there is a satisfyingly happy ending. What more could any one ask for?

4.0 out of 5 stars Slick Mystery April 24, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Very interesting! Fast paced, fact-filled, and edge of your seat action.

Only downside, DO NOT attempt reading before bed, or while not fully awake. This bad boy needs your full attention.

Love the redheaded spitfire, Chloe. Her adorable hetero(or not so hetero)-life mate, Miles. And the chivalrous, Detective Nash. The combination of interesting characters, legal-eagle plot line, and downright out of nowhere twists, kept me enthralled.

Took a few chapters to get me hooked, but once I was in I couldn't put it down.

A razor sharp, eye-opening read from Diane Castle. Kudos!

2.0 out of 5 stars weak protagonist. August 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Can I place this novel in the same vein as a John Grisholm, Michael Connelly, David Baldacci, etc novel? No I definitely wouldn't. I can't even fathom that 'Black Oil, Red Blood' is classified as a legal fiction/thriller novel.

Why?

A bimbo as a protagonist who is also a hysterical attorney? Gulp! Groan..!
A disgraced handsome detective? Stereotypical.
A gay effeminate paralegal? Oh come on!
Big bad wolf masquerading as Big Oil? I'm gonna huff and puff... never mind.

Why 2 stars instead of 1? It's because the author had managed to teach me or more specifically spoon feed me lectures about the economic and environmental ramifications of crude oil and its byproducts. So kudos to you. You succeeded. However it's not a very good storytelling novel.

1.0 out of 5 stars Promising Beginning Turns Into Idiotic Twiddle July 16, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
****WARNING - POSSIBLE SPOILERS***

I was very intrigued when I started reading this book. I found the main character to be interesting. I am always keen to read a book where conspiracy theories are explored. There seemed to be an impressive amount of information regarding the extreme dangers of toxic pollution due to the refinement of crude oil, and the corruption of big businesses and government.

In the hands of an author like John Grisham, for example, this could have been a powerhouse tale. I can only imagine what he would have done with the potential this book possessed.

Sadly, there was no Grisham to pull this one out of the fire. The story quickly devolved into a rushed farce full of idiotically unlikely scenarios. I get it, it's fiction. Suspending belief is one thing; checking one's brain at the door is another entirely.

This book needed to be paced much more evenly for it to be enjoyable or relatable. The sheer amount of activity that takes place in the span of three days makes it very difficult to follow. This could have been wonderfully suspenseful, but it was not allowed to be.

Finally, I come to the part that generally gets my ire up: the obligatory romance. I am sure that somewhere, some author can meld mystery, suspense, and romance. I have yet to come across an entirely successful example, however.
As if the violent, action packed scenes weren't crowded enough, the reader is asked to endure 'time outs' for ridiculous romantic exchanges between the two title characters.

2.0 out of 5 stars Book for a second grader June 20, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
even though the educational point of this book is very interesting, the book itself is very simple and not deep enough for a good reading. I would absolutely not recommend this book to anybody who wants a serious reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars very good book August 11, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I got this book on the free Kindle book list and was very pleased by it. The book was very well written and has some exciting moments in it, especially in the end when I just wanted to keep reading and reading to see what was going to be happening. I just had to finish it right up. I hope you will give this author a chance, you can tell that she did some painstaking research, which is how it should be.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting look at oil business, slow thriller July 27, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Diane Castle's "Black Oil, Red Blood" certainly knows its subject. The strange grasp that the oil industry has on the American and world economy is laid bare in this extremely well-researched book. Had this been a strict, legal expose of the oil industry, my recommend would be stronger. But ultimately, the thriller aspect of the novel seems a little rushed and the characters fall a bit flat. I really wanted to like Chloe, our heroine, but she never seems to be in control of her fate and the resolution of the crime comes by other hands. For its deft summary of the evils of the oil industry, I can give kudos. But as a crime thriller, "Black Oil, Red Blood" lacks focus.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good stuff
I enjoyed this book a great deal. Some of the dialog was a little cheesy, but the storyline was great. The information about the oil companies, if true, was very enlightening.
