5.0 out of 5 stars The Three Sounds, Black Orchid, March 14, 2005
This review is from: Black Orchid (Audio CD)
There weren't that many "groups" that recorded for Blue Note. Most of the dates were just some of the best musicians in New York doing standards and originals on the spot, for one night only, until the next session.

However, The Three Sounds were one group that frequently went into Rudy Van Gelder's studio to record great music. This particular date, "Black Orchid," is probaly their most famous date.

This album captures them in some of their most inspiring settings. From the opening note, you are sure this is going to be a neat little session.

Tunes such as the Black Orchid, are so fresh and unique. The bossa nova influence is so perfect for the song. From the up-beat songs Tadd's Delight, and Nature Boy, the album is a bright masterpiece.

The Three Sounds are such a unique trio. Though highly underrated, the group recorded so many albums for Blue Note, though many are hard to find. Gene Harris, Anthony Simpkins & Bill Dowdy are all the perfect match, for this great little swinging combo, called The Three Sounds.
