This is the soundtrack from the film that introduced Bossa Nova to the USA in 1959. Its famous songs are Manha de Carnaval ("Morning of Carnival" [Rio de Janeiro's annual carnaval], known in its English version as "Day in the Life of a Fool") and A Felicidade (Happiness). Both themes run through the film repeatedly sung and played on guitar. Both are haunting and memorable and ingenious melodies. And there is enough "batucada" (the compelling, in-your-face complex drum jams that fill the time of Carnaval) to satisfy anyone who loves this part of Brazilian music. The booklet is written with great intelligence and care and gives a lot of background. Recording quality is remarkable, especially considering that some is from the film's optical soundtrack. I bought both this soundtrack CD and the Criterion Collection DVD, which I recommend, b/c seeing the video gives the music its proper context. The composers and performers of this music are Brazilian legends. If you are seriously into Brazilian music, this is a great soundtrack CD.

i'll leave it to others to nail the basic plot points and detail the brilliance of the music, the colours and the breathtaking cinematography...
suffice it to say that if you have ever heard of this film, but never bothered to actually experience it, do so now, with this excellent remastering of the film....the thing i love about dvds is that it brings solid older films to new audiences, in a way that sometimes outdoes the original releases - at least in terms of the quality of the film's preservation....it's as if it came out yesterday.... there are certain films that helped form the way i think, feel, am...this is one of them...very likely one of the films that influenced me the most, in terms of showing me how a "movie" can actually expand your life, and horizons... there is no other film i know that quite captures the same qualities this film manages to capture... a truly remarkable accomplishment...but don't let that scare you off....once people go on about how brilliant a film is, it seems to be the kiss of death.... i have friends i couldn't pay enough to get them to watch "citizen kane" - and it's one of the best flicks ever made.... so enough - just watch this once, and it will haunt you forever....youll probably rush out and buy up some of jobim's other music, as well....
