Book Description

February 15, 2000
Four short stories of murder and mystery, in which Edgar Allan Poe wrote about terrible people who lead strange lives. "Penguin Readers" is a series of simplified novels, film novelizations and original titles that introduce students at all levels to the pleasures of reading in English. Originally designed for teaching English as a foreign language, the series' combination of high interest level and low reading age makes it suitable for both English-speaking teenagers with limited reading skills and students of English as a second language. Many titles in the series also provide access to the pre-20th century literature strands of the National Curriculum English Orders. "Penguin Readers" are graded at seven levels of difficulty, from "Easystarts" with a 200-word vocabulary, to Level 6 (Advanced) with a 3000-word vocabulary. In addition, titles fall into one of three sub-categories: "Contemporary", "Classics" or "Originals". At the end of each book there is a section of enjoyable exercises focusing on vocabulary building, comprehension, discussion and writing. Some titles in the series are available with an accompanying audio cassette, or in a book and cassette pack. Additionally, selected titles have free accompanying "Penguin Readers Factsheets" which provide stimulating exercise material for students, as well as suggestions for teachers on how to exploit the Readers in class.

5.0 out of 5 stars The "Black Cat" was one of the best stories I have ever read, March 12, 1999
By A Customer
The Black Cat is a great short story. One of the best I have ever read. The story was scary, exciting and full of amazing things. I got some chills down my back, and I dont get scared that easily. My favorite part was when he took his anger out on his so called favorite pet. It was in such good detail and so exciting. Also the end was really good. The way the cat got trappped in the wall and his secret was found out. All because he was careless and allowed the cat to climb in there with out knowing. It was just a great story all together. If you loike Edgar Allen Poe you should read this, it's one of his best!

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple , but unbelievable, October 22, 2001

Maybe this review would be bigger than the story itself. a simple idea and an unbelievable story. the story of our evil deeds hauting us. it is scary , but true. the most amazing thing in this story is Edgar Poe himself; his greatest use of the language, his realistic description of anger. he made me laugh many times , though it this short story is not intended to do that, because of his clever use of the vocabulary. it is a must read book. Dont think of missing it.
