Editorial Reviews

Review

One wonders if there is really a place for another "complete, easy.to-follow guide, designed to serve your needs from the time your child is conceived until he is six years old." Indeed there is, for though much of the information is offered elsewhere (and in greater detail), it is helpful for the black parent to develop an early awareness of the specific medical or genetic problems that may arise - sickle-cell anemia, diabetes, hypertension, keloids, multiple birth and umbilical hernia (both somewhat more common among blacks), and lactase deficiency (the reason a majority of black adults and children are unable to digest milk); as well as economic and environmental considerations - whether to choose a black doctor, or to teach your child standard and/or black English (McLaughlin, the wife of an obstetrician, recommends both), and how to express a positive attitude about color. However, taking into account dietary and other economic differences, one is taken aback at her "findings" that mental and physical development is faster for black than for white infants.
