Shouldn't be deemed a sequel....,
By Tazzyt2bossye "A Book Junkie fiending for a g... (QUEEN CITY, USA) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE)

"Black Reign" was supposed to have been the sequel to "My Time To Shine", but unfortunately Mr. McNair missed that goal. Instead he introduces you to a central character named Angela that is out to have a good time. She mixes drinks, drugs, and men together and you know the rest!
It's a coming of age book without much of a lesson, but a decent read just the same. Mr. McNair does have potential, I think it was a better read than "My Time To Shine".

The reason this book was given a four instead of a five was because after reading the back cover and then readng the book, it was definitly not what I expected. It made you feel that this was the continuation of Black' story but it is soooo not. It is the story of Angela, some one definitly not in the first book.
Nevertheless, this was an excellent book. It tell the story of a young girl finally out on her own. She may have grown up in a drug infested area, but her parents gave her an easy and protected life. Therefore imagine the experiences she experience now that she's 'grown' and can now live and enjoy life. However, playing with fire will surely cause burns and Angela surely learns this. Once again, another book by McNair that is vividly told and leaves you feeling every emotion he brings forth. But one question where in the hell is Black?

"My Time To Shine" was one to the greatest books I've ever read. However "Black's Reign" SUCKED!!!!! I can't believe this is the follow up to a classic street saga, Ed really let us down with this one. Maybe he can make a comeback with another street sage and this time include Black??????

This book was really a good read. I read it in one day. The down side to this book was that it was supposed to be a sequel to "My Time to Shine", which I thoroughly enjoyed. I thought in this book Black would reunite with his brothers after being on the run. The description of this book was misleading.
I felt this book should have ended on a positive note with the girls learning valuable life lessons.

Angela and Monica are on their way...to college that is! Heyyyyyyyyyyyyy, they're young and fine with tight bodies and expensive tastes, to boot! At every corner, they're looking for young men to pave the way and fulfill their every need...both sexual and financial. Oh, but does such thoughts EVER have consequences. These two young ladies find themselves in some harrowing situations that may prove to be deadly!
Again, I get the feeling that this author is trying to pen a novel for young adults, which is great, but I still have reservations about this novel. Granted, the main characters are just graduating high school and off to college, so they are naive and find themselves in dilemmas young adults their age and fresh out of high school often encounter. And that's fine, but I think the author should have included some sort of guidance at the end of the novel. This is not a book one would want their very young adult/still teen to read and just toss aside, there is some serious dialogue that should occur between the reader and parent/trusted adult. I think these authors have a responsibility to guide their readers, especially the young and impressionable. Another thing, the dialect really irked my nerves! And having gone to Hampton University, I cannot say that it's fully specific to the area. That said, I very much enjoyed the friendships within this book...Angela and her sistahgurl Monica...the two of them and their platonic male friend Rome. It reminded me of my own college sistahgurl friendships and platonic friendships with males.

Duh!...Who Reigns? What Happened to Black?,
By
This review is from: Black Reign (Paperback)
Like earlier readers, upon re-reading the back of this book, I wondered "Who are these people? and Where is that book?" Something really got confused and I have no idea what it was (because I didn't read the predecessor to this book - and now don't intend to). I initially put the book down until on a Saturday (and yes, it's a one-day-read)I decided to give the H.S. grads a chance. I mean, there are such classics as Sister Souljah's "The Coldest Winter Ever". Mr. McNair unfortunatey did not come close. However, he does show potential. If he'd stick to his plot and get his characters straight, he'd be going somewhere. There is excellent story progression and character development. The jargon or language was wack. Although I'm not of this generation, I have never heard anyone talk like this (and I work with teenagers and drug users and dealers!). I wouldn't preadventure to tell the author how to end his book, but I was personally disappointed with the ending. The LESSON seemed to be that if you're young and dumb, you can do and recover from anything; for after all, "revenge is sweet". Duh...(a lesson that reeks, as did the book, of male testosterone). I do however, enjoy male romance authors because the brotha's tend to keep it real. Perhaps Damien's, Mac's and Angela's reality, was just "too heavy" for me. I would read future works by this author, but would hesitate to recommend him to others.

The reign of what,
By
This review is from: Black Reign (Paperback)
I must say that I did like the book the books summary had me looking for other characters like who was Shannon and when did Black come in his name was only mention he wasn't in the book at all. The book to me was about two young girls who graduate from high school they are attending college where Angelas meets Damien and Mac both man are ballers in her world one she really loves the others she cares about until he goes upside her head the books ending was sad to me but overall the book was a good read I like the style that Mr Mcnair writes i will definitly read his books again.
