4.0 out of 5 stars Very technical book that tells the story
Mr. Steven's book tells the story of how this rifle was adopted and he goes into great detail. If you are uninterested in this level of detail perhaps this isn't the book for you. But for the enthusiast this is a four or five star book. It really depends on your level of interest.

2.0 out of 5 stars What was the point of the book?
This book was incredibly difficult to read. Despite my interest in the subject matter it was just a difficult and rather cumbersome read.

I think having someone with a flair for storytelling instead of stapling together disjointed reports would be an improvement. Even the typesetting was difficult. At the end of each paragraph you had to decide where to continue...

4.0 out of 5 stars Super book; what it is and what it's not, October 15, 2007

This review is from: The Black Rifle: M16 Retrospective (Modern US Military Small Arms Series- Volume Three) (Hardcover)
Super, authoritative documentation of how we got the M16 -- the engineering, the salesmanship, the politics, and all the pitfalls along the way. Well written and very enjoyable to those who have a passion to everything there is to know about the M16. Carries up to the adoption of the M16A2 (1987).

Does not attempt to focus on nuanced distinctions between the M16 and various models AR15s you may find on the market. As the title says, it's about the devlopment of M16 as our battle rifle -- not the civilian AR15 version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book - but Amazon's price is outrageous, July 21, 2007

This is definitely a book to have if you own an AR15-type rifle, but why is Amazon's listed price almost forty dollars more than the list price direct from the publisher?

This is the bible of the AR-Phile. It is full of the minutiae that will make a tech geek babble with glee. If you love the AR and want to know all there is to know about its history and development buy this book. Buy it now before it gets more expensive.

It was almost as if you had to know the material to read the book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste, February 4, 2009
This review is from: The Black Rifle: M16 Retrospective (Modern US Military Small Arms Series- Volume Three) (Hardcover)
If you are interested in production rifles this book is nothing more than a waste of money and good paper. I have ten other books by Collector Grade Publications, those I use on a regular basis and feel they are all worth the money charged. So far the most useful purpose I have found for Black Rifle is as a door stop. If you are interested in prototypes and politics this is the book for you.
