Blitzen Trapper has slowly but surely been working its way into the bigger attention of the indie-music scene, and their 2008 album "Furr" was nothing short of oustanding. While we await the next album, the band has just released this 7 EP track, featuring 6 previously unreleased tracks recorded during the "Furr" sessions.

"Black River Killer" (7 tracks; 18 min.) starts off with the title track, the sole track from the "Furr" album. Not a likely (commercial) choice for a single, but what a great tune it is. After that, the EP brings 6 new tracks and what a delight they are. Continuing the musical vein of the "Furr" album, they are a mix of harder charging tracks and quiet songs. "Silver Moon" is for me the best on here, an exhuberant song, although the Beatles-esque "Going Down" comes close. Another highlight is the short "Preacher's Sister's Boy". Eric Early, the band's singer-songwriter, is at his creative best throughout these nuggets, and it makes me wonder why several of these songs didn't make the tracklisting of "Furr", period.

In all, this is an excellent companion to the "Furr" album. If you wonder where you can here these guys, check out WOXY (BAM! The Future of Rock and Roll), the internet-only station that brings the best indie-music in the country, bar none. I had the good fortune of catching Blitzen Trapper in concert at Coachella earlier this year, and they put on a tremendous set, featuring primarily songs from "Furr". Meanwhile, this EP is highly recommended (and a must for Blitzen Trapper fans).
