I believe the previous reviewers have gone over the plot and characters pretty thoroughly, so I will just add my general review to this book. It is truly a page turner; the characters and the plot interweave to the point where you are drawn in quickly and completely, unable to put the book down because you want to know what's coming next. I had the same visceral reaction as when I was reading the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.
I'm really hoping the next book is in the chute and ready for release soon, because I really want to see where this story (and Jack) goes!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading "Black Road 2012". If you enjoy mystery/paranormal thrillers you will love this book. It was truly a visual experience - I felt right there alongside Jack Vane. Especially the last 150 pages, it felt like a rollercoaster ride. It would be awesome to see this book made into a movie. When I envisioned Jack Vane I thought of Mickey Rourke (who deserved the Oscar for "The Wrestler"). Congrats Friedberg on a work well done!

More Jack Vane please!,

This book is just out and lucky are those who have already read it.
Jack Vane, an ex-private detective, ill, injured, worn out by time and hard work, wants out of the profession, when he is being accused of murdering his wife and unborn twin daughters. As he becomes obsessed with finding the real murderers he is driven by greater powers and becomes a sort of semi-god. The story is a continuous swirl of events, a real roller coaster. It is a paranormal thriller, a love story, a crime story, all wrapped with the myth of the 2012 prophecy. The historical and scientific facts are well researched and the scenes are so vividly described, you feel like you are there! But don't read the last pages before it's time. The suspense lasts to the very last page.

Jack Vane is my hero,

I absolutely loved this book. And for somebody who doesn't usually choose detective / crime stories, I was astounded at how quickly and intensely I was drawn into this story. The author's blend of genres (also adding suspense and paranormal thriller) was honestly brilliant. I would totally recommend this to all types of readers -- if you love action thrillers, read it. If you love the paranormal and conspiracies upon conspiracies, read it. If you haven't even picked up a book in a while and are looking for a good one to get you jump-started, DEFINITELY read it! It's hard to put this one down. Lucky for us, there are sequels on the way! :)

Blending a noir mystery with a biblical thriller,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Black Road 2012 (Paperback)
Sometimes the desire for vengeance brings you upon more than you would ever expect. "Black Road 2012: Empire of the Gods" is the first book of the God conspiracy. Jack Vane, driven by the desire to find his wife's killer, finds that the pursuit of truth will get him just that and so much more on top it. Blending a noir mystery with a biblical thriller, Jeffrey A. Friedberg draws upon his own experiences to bring readers quite the story with "Black Road 2012".

Caution: Book Causes Lack of Sleep Due to Being Riveted,
By Annmarie (Highland, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Black Road 2012 (Empire Of The Gods - The Gods Conspiracy) (Kindle Edition)
This book should indeed come with a warning label....I stayed up all night to read this rocket ride of a thriller. The action never stops, and you are drawn from page to page to find the answers to the never-ending questions brought up by this book. The book's plot encompasses the Roswell incident to Native American spirituality, to good old fashioned detective work, weaving with incredible detail a narrative about native civilizations and their closeness to nature with sci fi explanations for the inexplicable. The characters fascinate and frustrate, all the while leaving you wanting to know more. Thank goodness it is the first of a four book series...I can hardly wait for the next book!

It's impossible to add to the great reviews already posted ..but I feel I just have to add what a pleasure it was to read this first time author and can't wait for the next installment to come out . Hope it won't be too long of a wait ... Can't wait to see what happens next. The whole book was great especially the last 150 pages ( which kinda took place in my own back yard ,, making it all the more interesting ) .. I was glued to my chair until I finished it.
Thanks for a great read. Marion Stitt

Worst book I've read in years....,

How anyone can say that this is a great book is beyond me. I forced myself to finish it so I could leave a fair review...hoping that it would get better. When the spelling and grammar weren't driving me nuts the story line was frustrating me. Looking at the author's background I had hoped that some startling facts would border on the possible giving the reader something to think about. Maybe it is all possible...secrets that only Jeffrey is privy to. Maybe we just don't know it yet and Jeffrey is trying to prepare us for great changes in our future. Maybe this whole world is going to go berserk in 2012. If that is the case then Jeffrey could have done a much better job of convincing his readers. There is nothing is this book that would make me want to read the next three.

Very enjoyable, plenty of hard and fast action combined with Stephen King-esque paranormal stuff - the detail really draws you into the story. Can't wait for the next one!
