4.0 out of 5 stars ZZZZ! Oh Hey
Basically, this book had everything to do with Diablo, D2, and LOD. Unlike the other reviews I find this book right along the lines of the the Diablo universe. The constant war between Hell and Heaven, and mankind being stuck in between.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not at as good as the first one of the series
I love books that start with some injection of rush. This book lacks one. Although it is related to the game, it offers very little conection with the original (game) story, maybe 2 pages at most. The plot is slow and (rarely) a little contradictory. From my point of view, the end is not as good. The three stars because of the game series and because the story usually...

This review is from: The Black Road (Diablo, Book 2) (Mass Market Paperback)
Basically, this book had everything to do with Diablo, D2, and LOD. Unlike the other reviews I find this book right along the lines of the the Diablo universe. The constant war between Hell and Heaven, and mankind being stuck in between.

Most people think Diablo is going to be in these books. If you play the game you know the story behind Diablo's undoing. These books are in the world of Diablo, based on other "mortals" defeating the forces of evil.

Now for the plot, it was strung out, and at the end it left you hanging. But I would recommend it, for "hard-core" Diablo players.
I give it a 4 out of 5. This book makes me want to get the 3rd book in series.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Decent Story, August 26, 2006

Diablo: The Legacy of Blood (Book 2 in the Series)
By: Mel Odom

Another good book in the Diablo series that is based on the popular video game. This is a totally different story, with totally different characters, and yes totally different locations. In this book, an evil priest tracks down the doorway to unleashing a powerful demon into the world of man. But at the same time an unwitting sailor is on his way to the island to rescue a member of the royal family and gets tangled up in the whole matter as he witnesses the coming of the evil demon. Now, after tragedy and hardship, he must bring his life together, to try and destroy the demon that took his best friend and rid the world of its evil influence.

I liked this story, there were some pretty good action scenes, the only thing that I don't like is the ease where time just totally skips in several months and even in years. But it is still a great story, much like the first book, this has more fight scenes to it than the first, they have lengthy gaps between them, that's the only bad thing other then a few spelling errors throughout the book, gotta give it an 9.1/10.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some good, some bad, September 21, 2002
This review is from: The Black Road (Diablo, Book 2) (Mass Market Paperback)
Some parts of the book are very well written, and I really found it hard to put down the book. However, the lead character IS kind of irritating, especially the later part when he just goes on and on about his father etc and refused to act. The main baddie is not any one of the Prime Evils. Although this is quite different from the game itself, this book is generally a good read. It has an interesting ending too, which I won't spoil for you. Go read the book!

4.0 out of 5 stars THE BLACK ROAD, June 4, 2002

This review is from: The Black Road (Diablo, Book 2) (Mass Market Paperback)
I personally think that this was a good book, i am a Diablo fanatic, but if any of you out there are the same way and want to read this to get the same feeling you would from the game, your not going to. Infact Diablo is not even in this book and his name is only mentioned a few times. Anyway, the book starts out slow, and keeps going back and forth between different scenarios. This gets confusing after awhile because you start to not know who or what your reading about and you have to go back and see that the book is talking about 4 different charecters in four different places in the same chapter. This goes on through about a quarter of the way through the book and happens less often. The book picks up its pace very quickly and the author goes into much detail describing how things are working out with the charecters in the story. You will hear over and over again about Darricks father and the beatings he received when he was a child which gets really annoying after awhile. The relationship between the demon Kabraxis and the priest Cholik was what really got me interested in the book, the author goes into great detail descibing there relation ship and what there plans are, but he doesn't really go into depth about Darrick, all you hear about is his father, and his friend Mat.When you think the story is just about to really pick up with Darrick, your on the last 70 pages and then your done with the book. Towards the end the whole story line is rushed and it looks like the writer was pressed for time, or just wanted to finish the book. The ending is good though, the charecters are cool, as you read you begin to feel the charecters pains and understand there thoughts and desires based on the authors descriptions. The setting is ok, but it tends to stay in one genral area, mainly three towns, and it only refers to places from the first and second game of diablo to make the story sound more interesting. This is a good read if you like the setting of Diablo more than if you like Diablo, and aside from the rushed ending this is a really good book and its worth a read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Diablo 2, The Black Road is a fun read, January 23, 2008

This review is from: The Black Road (Diablo, Book 2) (Mass Market Paperback)
I didn't expect much from this book, after all it's written about the backstory of a computer game. I did expect familiar territory, but what I wasn't expecting was that the game's immersive backstory would be picked up and handled so well. There was much less monster-whacking and much more interesting inner conflicts than I expected. The particular demon of the book is a nasty one, and it had some deep things to show about the way human beings respond to what they want to hear.

The main character has abuse issues with his father and unlike many novels that deal with abuse issues, that wasn't resolved with a pat answer. He grew certainly, but the book didn't end with everyone happily all right. Yet the ending was interesting in its way.

I'm enjoying the series and will probably get more of these, but it wouldn't surprise me if "The Black Road" turned out to be one of its lasting high points. If I'd never played the game, I would've really enjoyed this novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars An entertaining adventure of temptation and redemption, December 25, 2007
This review is from: The Black Road (Diablo, Book 2) (Mass Market Paperback)
The Black Road is an entertaining tale set in the Diablo universe. While it doesn't directly relate to any of the events or characters in either of the two Diablo games, the book itself is full of memorable charcters, subversive demons, and action-packed battles.
The main character, Darrick Lang, is one that is interesting to follow. He has his life in control, is a leader among his peers, and is on a rescue mission to save the king's nephew from a group of pirates. During this rescue, a demon is brought back into the world and after Darrick's encouter with the demon, his life is changed forever. As a result we see him change from a confident leader to a drunken sot until he is forced to choose between redeeming himself and facing the demon or wallowing in the past in his own misery. His dilemma feels genuine and watching him fall from grace and then tread the path of salvation leads to an exciting final confrontation that will keep you hooked until the end.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of fantasy novels and the struggles between good and evil. If you're looking for a rehash of the Diablo games you'll be disappointed, but if you want a tale of men fighting demons that definitely feels right in the Diablo universe, you'll be in for a treat.

4.0 out of 5 stars Does a fair job of keeping the Diablo series fresh., May 5, 2002
This review is from: The Black Road (Diablo, Book 2) (Mass Market Paperback)
With an all new cast of characters and villains, The Black Road is another trip into the world of Diablo. The beginning of the book starts of pretty slow, but then picks up gradually, filled with suspense and action. The reason I didn't give this book a perfect score was because some scenes seem rushed, others tend to not much very much sense, and the time passing in the book is often confusing. The ending:sort of a let down/cliffhanger, leaves me wishing for more. But all in all, a good few days of reading in store.

2.0 out of 5 stars Has a bit more ambition than most, but it's still not good, June 24, 2009

This review is from: The Black Road (Diablo, Book 2) (Mass Market Paperback)

This really isn't that good, but I do admire the attempt to distinguish this book from others of its genre. Here the hero is conflicted by years of abuse from his father and has basically fallen apart after the death of his only real friend, and the demon who has returned is using the "healing of the sick" scam to gain power . Too bad the quality of the writing doesn't match the creative plot. Clumsy dialogue and less than memorable descriptions keep the reader from becoming enmeshed in the story, and after a short while the hero becomes a whiner instead of someone you'll actually care about. I don't expect much from this type of book, but it should at least be enjoyable. This didn't meet that criterion.
