The Good
"How Was I Supposed to Know" kicks things off with a mid-tempo swagger. The music blends a little country twang with a little bit of bluesy soul. Heartache, guilt, and regrets ring loud and clear lyrically on "Voice in My Head." The track is more of a sorrowful ballad than an optimistic one. "You Don't Know What Your Missing" sort of flips the coin on its predecessor, as the tempo and distortion picks up, and thoughts of regret turn to thoughts of blame and revenge. Subdued verses followed by passionate choruses make up "All I Ever Wanted." Vocalist Kevin Presbrey is at his best on the hopeless ballad "So Far Away."
The Bad
Nothing notable
The Verdict
It's clear that Black Roses isn't about the fun times and great memories of a relationship. There's no doubt that frontman Kevin Presbrey has been through a lot of relationships gone bad, or at least one deep relationship gone bad. Sorrow, regrets, and heartbreak set to a country/blues soundtrack is what Black Roses is all about.
