Product Description

TOMATO: Tomatoes are rich in vitamins and antioxidants, and the seeds are high in fiber. The green parts are mildly poisonous, which is not surprising, as tomatoes are closely related to both nightshade and tobacco. The tomato was originally believed to be poisonous when introduced into Europe, and was used solely as an ornamental plant during the 16th and 17th centuries. The first traces of its use as a food date back to the first half of the 18th century. Tomatoes are now a tasty ingredient in many dishes, and are used fresh, canned, stewed or even sun-dried.

Black Russian Tomato: Thin brownish skin, red-pink, purple flesh, meaty, juicy flavor resembles that of Brandy wine, dark purple stripes radiate from blossom end to stem, green shoulder, thrives under cool growing conditions.

I ordered these back in April and had them delivered in May. They arrived in great shape-believe it or not they came in a priority mail cardboard box filled with "ghost poo" packing:) I hope this helps someone else in making their decision-it was very convenient for me and I can't get this type of tomato where I live.

The plants were a little smaller than expected when they arrived. However, they have flourished and are now well established. The package included directions to mitigate transplant shock which I found useful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Black Russian tomato, May 29, 2010

The plants arrived in excellent condition. I planted them when the weather was a little too cool, but they survived and have been growing fast since the temperature went up. They have blooms on them already.

Updating as of August 3, 2010. The plants are very tall and strong, lots of tomatoes. The tomatoes are purple but really don't look like the picture. The plants are productive and the tomatoes very tasty, so I'm not complaining. I mention this because the other varieties of tomatoes that I ordered were incorrect -- did not look at all like what was ordered. I complainted, sent pictures and was refunded for those.
