5.0 out of 5 stars Looked great when recieved.
I ordered these back in April and had them delivered in May. They arrived in great shape-believe it or not they came in a priority mail cardboard box filled with "ghost poo" packing:) I hope this helps someone else in making their decision-it was very convenient for me and I can't get this type of tomato where I live.

2.0 out of 5 stars disappointing crop
we bought 4 of these - they were put in new individual topsy turvy containers with which we had great success last year - we added recommended feeding and they were watered every evening - they flowered very little and we have harvested less than 10 tomatoes in total from the 4 plants. They do taste very good - but colour was nothing like illustration - more like black...

The plants were a little smaller than expected when they arrived. However, they have flourished and are now well established. The package included directions to mitigate transplant shock which I found useful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Black Russian tomato, May 29, 2010

The plants arrived in excellent condition. I planted them when the weather was a little too cool, but they survived and have been growing fast since the temperature went up. They have blooms on them already.

Updating as of August 3, 2010. The plants are very tall and strong, lots of tomatoes. The tomatoes are purple but really don't look like the picture. The plants are productive and the tomatoes very tasty, so I'm not complaining. I mention this because the other varieties of tomatoes that I ordered were incorrect -- did not look at all like what was ordered. I complainted, sent pictures and was refunded for those.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Tomatoes, September 1, 2011

This product/plant is just as it was described. Planting in a greenhouse and/or in a garden is a reasonable way to grow these tomatoes. I have recommended this product to my friends and to other gardeners in my area.

2.0 out of 5 stars shipped too early, August 31, 2011

Even though I specified when to ship as instructed, the plants were shipped immediately and struggled severely. I ended up tossing them because I found healthy plants at a nursery later in the season. Shipping time is important when shipping to colder areas. This company stated that shipping date should be specified when ordering, and I did so. They shipped too soon anyway. Not good customer care for a company that handles live product.

2.0 out of 5 stars Wrong Plants, June 8, 2011

This review is from: Black Russian Tomato 4 Plants - Brandywine Flavor
I ordered Black Russian Tomato 4 Plants - Brandywine Flavor tomato plants, Cherokee Purple Tomato 4 Plants - ORDER NOW! tomato plants and Pruden's Purple Tomato 4 Plants - Early/Heirloom/Firm tomato plants.
Hirt's Garden sent Roma tomato plants, or something similar, for the Black Russian and Cherokee Purple. They look identical, and NOTHING like the pictures. Extremely tall, fast growing with tiny, lacy, almost stunted-looking leaves that 'fill-out' eventually to look like dragons scales. The fruit is long and tapered, like a Roma tomato, or a hot pepper.
The Purple Pruden's tomato plants seem to be correct; with Potato-like leaves, wide, flat, slicing-type fruit.
I have taken photos.
I think Hirt's field or greenhouse workers sent out the Debaro Tomato 4 Plants -Black Russian Plum from Siberia variety for both of my purple-types, because of the clustering, long-shaped young fruits. Supposedly comparable in color, but not shape or size.
I am disappointed, because so much of the season is gone, and I will not make any exotic blue tomatoes, even if they replaced them at this point (unless they send some really large plants - which I doubt).
They should develop a better way of identifying the young plants, or seed containers.
I doubt I will order from them again, even though they had such speedy shipping and I was pleased at the condition of the plants when they arrived.
I tried e-mailing my complaint (for photos), but they do not have e-mail.

2.0 out of 5 stars Hirts Black Russian Brandywine Heirloom tomatoes, May 18, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Black Russian Tomato 4 Plants - Brandywine Flavor
I recieved my order fast but the plants arrived in terrible condition. Only one is strong, & three are very weak and dying. I transplanted them into bigger containers w/special potting soil but I would have liked "four healthy, strong" plants, as I expected for my money spent. I don't believe I would shop at Hirts through Amazon.com for vegetable plants in the future.
