Editorial Reviews

2008 two CD release from the British singer, songwriter and one-time Teardrop Explodes leader. Black Sheep is a musical exploration of what it is to be an outsider in modern Western Culture. Across 11 songs and one epic poem, Cope examines the idea of social outcasts and how they - through their sheer obstinacy and strength of personality - carve a path for themselves in the normal world, often changing society’s own concepts of normality in the process. Cope attributes his personal descent into outsider-dom to his ninth birthday on which 116 children his own age died in the infamous Aberfan Disaster The 11 songs here reveal Cope at a pinnacle of songwriting and feature sumptuous lashings of orchestral Mellotron, orchestral percussion and marching bass drums, plus oboe, wah guitar, rumbling synthesizers and gorgeous harmony vocals. Head Heritage. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Druid's Best Album In Years !, September 27, 2008

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Black Sheep (Audio CD)
" Black Sheep" is one of Julian Cope's greatest albums ever. It's a return to his paramount psychedelic era akin to "Peggy Suicide", "20 MOthers" and "Interpreter." Julian's diverse vocals resonate very nicely as they are accompanied by majestic, surreal and dynamic keyboards and mellotron 400's. The Druid does inordinatly rail against organized religion but his environmental, animal rights and especially female liberation messages are truly from his heart. Julian Cope is an extremely talented vocalist and multi-instrumentalist and "Black Sheep" is the CD that Cope fans have been waiting for because all his skills reach fruition. It a 2CD audible pleasure that's consistently brilliant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Long Live St. Julian!, October 18, 2011

The previous review sums it all up quite nicely. This is a must for any Cope fan.
It's Big and Powerful and Real. I have listened to this album over and over since I got it
and it has given me a new level of appreciation for Cope that I might have doubted was possible.
(The packaging is great also).
