4.0 out of 5 stars Practical, but lacks detail
Insightful, but only scratches the surface as to the life of single people. Too many case studies without helpful details. Didn't really offer enough solutions, more of a study of the dating game rather than useful tips.
Published on September 3, 1998

2.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat useful, but outdated...
While reading this book, I definitely could tell that the author was very knowledgeable and had done a lot of research into African-American relationships. However, that being said, this book seemed more like a Phd dissertation than a self-help book. 2.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat useful, but outdated..., November 5, 2011

While reading this book, I definitely could tell that the author was very knowledgeable and had done a lot of research into African-American relationships. However, that being said, this book seemed more like a Phd dissertation than a self-help book. Dr. Davis "pointed out" the different issues that occur in relationships, however he rarely gave advice on how to resolve issues encountered in dating. It was as if I was reading a textbook about African-American dating, which is not what I was looking for when I bought the book. I lost interest in the book half-way through while hoping that the author would start giving more advice and pointers into dating, which sadly never came. Also, the book is very outdated. I know that this book was first published in the early 1990s, and it shows... There was no mention of internet dating whatsoever, which in current times, is a major part of dating and relationships and really can't be ignored. If you're seeking a book that can advise you and identify the issues that you are currently facing while being a single African-American, I have to suggest that you look for a different book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing, Informative and Useful, October 31, 2011

In this book Dr. Larry E. Davis articulates from a sociological framework the experiences black Americans face in the dating arena. This book serves as a a guide, an insight, voice of reason and perhaps even a sign of hope to the black dating world. The incorporation of case studies and statistics makes this book even richer and it adds to his credibility as the well informed researcher. As a social science professional, I found this book informative and socially relevant, as Dr. Davis draws on social exchange theory of romance to illustrate how dating operates. Furthermore, he provides a cultural logical explanation behind several social processes some including (1) why there are more black men with white women than black women with white men, (2) why we date who we do and (3) why some black professional women settle for less. He also touches on how racial stereotypes factor into the dating game, which I would contend is very pertinent to today's dating world. As the common reader, this book was well crafted, flawlessly put together and fun to read. As a black Hispanic sister, there was nothing more refreshing than being reaffirmed that much of my individual experiences in the dating world are due to larger societal factors. This book also gives me hope that I will not be a single professional forever! I enjoyed the words of advise from the expert. Whether you are actively engaged in the dating game or enjoying "romantic downtime," you have to read this book!

Excellent and informative. Great real life examples. I originally read this book over 10 years ago but recently re-read it and it was worth the review.
