Book Description

Meridian December 1, 1992
This sweeping anthology celebrates the richly textured black voices of the South, their cadences steeped in the sonorous heritage of the oral tradition. Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Black authors have frequently been ignored in collections of Southern literature; this anthology reveals how unfortunate such oversights are. Though the editors present various forms produced by 56 black Southern authors, as with any anthology, one regrets some omissions. Despite an admitted focus on 20th-century literature, figures such as Alice Walker, Henry Dumas, Sonia Sanchez, and Brenda Marie Osbey have been left out. However, many choices are inspired, including Frank Yerby's "Health Card" and John Henrik Clarke's "The Lynching Bee," and well-known writers (e.g., Richard Wright, Maya Angelou) are well balanced with those who have not yet received their due (e.g., Arthenia B. Millican, Doris Jean Austin). The introduction (by the late John Killens) and foreword (by Jerry Ward) provide useful background information. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars BSV contributor reflects on a letter from Dr.Killens, January 20, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Black Southern Voices: An Anthology (Meridian) (Paperback)
I was 18 years old and the recipient of the UNCF/ Reader's Digest 1st Place award for poetry in March of1968. Among those sending letters of congratulations was Dr.Killens. He suggested I forego offers to publish immediately and develop my craft and poetic signature. He suggested I work to become a "long distance runner." Continued interest in the Black Southern Voices anthology, including request to read my poem "Son Child" from the collection on a recent tour for another book reminded me of the value of Dr.Killen's foresight, and Dr. Jerry Ward's insight. Read at least a portion this book aloud during Black History Month 1998. John Milton Wesley
