5.0 out of 5 stars The Best from the Best
I saw this band live at the Scottish Heritage Festival in NJ about 4 years ago and have been unable to get enough of them ever since. I was always interested in celtic music but these guys made me an addict. Since then I have aquired a large collection of celtic rock and none of it comes close to the music of Brother. Black Stone Tramp is the best from this band. If...

1.0 out of 5 stars Oh Brother, You've got to be Kidding!
Brother fans have been telling me this is great stuff, but, oh, brother, it is not. The drumming is leaden, the singer sounds like he is being prodded with a sharp instrument where it really hurts, and there are too many bagpipes for my taste. And that awful Australian thingy that sounds like somebody plucking a thong g-string! Yech! Once again, don't be fooled by...

If you are the least bit interested in hearing incredible bag pipes then pick this albumn up. There are a few traditional pipe tunes mixed in with alot of original music and all of it rocks. The addition of the didgeridoo adds a spark of life and spice to a sound that already has you wanting to dance, sing and drum your hands and feet along. The more mellow tracks have thoughtful lyrics and a haunting sound. Particularly thought provoking is the track "Dirty Reeds" which transports you inside the despair of a dungeon prisoner. Close your eyes and you are down there in the dirt with him. Another noteworthy track is "Mr. Maintenance" an original tune that showcases the incredible piping prowess of these talented musicians. Also of interest is the song "Take you back" which was requested for the movie "Braveheart" by Mel Gibson (and in my opinion foolishly omitted from the soundtrack). All in all if you like the blend of traditional bag pipes and modern rock, then GET THIS ALBUMN!

5.0 out of 5 stars Their best effort - the ultimate celtic rock cd, May 30, 1999
This review is from: Black Stone Tramp (Audio CD)
Since seeing them at a busker's festival on the waterfront in Windsor, Ont., I've been a fan. This album damn near made me a fanatic. Anyone who is a fan of celtic music should own this album (their "Exit to Screechville" a close second).

Great arraingements played with an abundance of energy, amazingly tight harmonies, lots of bagpipe & dijeridoo (never thought you'd hear either of those on a pop album before, did you? Here you get both!), and some great tunes ranging from straightforward pop/rock (with lots of great hooks and smart lyrics), to the occasional celtic reel. Personal favs include "Dirty Reeds", "Falling", "Mr. Maintanence", "The Clumsy Lover" and their BEST track to date, "All I Know". What a GREAT song! That one has singlehandedly converted many friends to Brother fans.

Again, if your a fan of celtic music, or just a serious fan of good pop/rock, you should own this, as well as other material by Brother. If you've seen them live and don't know where to start, this is the place. It don't get much better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ouch!, March 23, 2001
This review is from: Black Stone Tramp (Audio CD)
Brother has become one of the most exciting performers that I have ever seen. Their live chemistry can be felt in every studio venture that they've produced to date. The symbolic tapestry of each piece is combined with splendid harmonies, haunting overtures of bagpipes and the didgeridoo, that will entrance and delight music fans of all ages. Kinetic energies literally explodes from their discs. My ears have never tasted anything so good. 5 plus stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sizzling Bagpipes & Rocking Didgeridoo, September 25, 2003

This Australian band's music is so strong it bursts off the player. The opening instrumental "Granny & Rory MacLeod" is such a powerful anthem, it'll get you off your feet! Angus Richardson's "Falling" boasts a great melody, "All I want is you to see how you burn inside me; all I need is you to know that you never leave me." From the rather silly "The Clumsy Lover" to the strong instrumental "The Mason's Apron" and the lovely closer "Carry Me," Hamish, Angus & Fergus with band mate Dave Albert Allen blast with energy and passion on this wonderful set. Enjoy!

With a high energy mix of bagpipes, didjeridoo and rock & roll Brother has managed to create a sound uniquely theirs and extremely addictive. In Black Stone Tramp, Brother has put together an album that spices up the tradtional but doesn't over shadow it. The vocals are smooth and soulful. A great first album for those newly discovering this wonderful Australian import.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing Alternative for any music lover, March 2, 1999
This review is from: Black Stone Tramp (Audio CD)
I became hooked on Brother a couple of years ago when I saw them at a local Highland festival, and have been a huge fan ever since. This release exemplifies the band's roots in celtic traditions with the influences of their Australian homeland. The mix of bagpipes and didjeredoo is nothing but revolutionary - Brother's unique sound is a refreshing departure from today's popular music, no matter what your musical taste. Definitely worth a listen - you might get hooked, too!

Being a musician I listen to music with a more critical ear. Brother has the sound that any musician would sell his soul to be able to make. Never before has a band with so much soul, tradition, and talent graced my CD player. I gave them a listen at the Scottish games in SoCal and have been hooked ever since. They play in local venues so go see them if you ever get the chance. You'll not regret the experience. You'll hear, live and on the CD, lead vocals and a sound that will make you dance and cry. This group has one of the tightest harmonies ever. Give it a listen, you'll be glad you did.

5.0 out of 5 stars An exhilarating new sound that'll take your breath away, February 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Black Stone Tramp (Audio CD)
"Black Stone Tramp" is a true masterpiece that brings to life what quality music should sound like. The charismatic Aussie rock band, BROTHER, fill this album with an impressive variety of instrumental and vocal songs. They really go back to their roots and feature the tribal sounds of the didgeridoo, and the traditional scottish bagpipes within the mainstream rock. The talent and skills of the artists are expressed through the amazing songs and wonderfully written lyrics. BROTHER's extraordinary voices are presented in songs like "All I Know," Falling," "Dirty Reeds," and "Take You Back." BROTHER's haunting harmonies make up the beautiful song "Carry me." The more up tempo songs that include: "The Clumsy Lover," "Granny and Rory MacLeod," and "Mr. Maintenance" are only a few of the more up tempo songs that will make you want to dance. All in all "Black Stone Tramp" is a brilliant album that carries the essence of BROTHER's live shows with music that will definately appeal to all ages.~Darci
