Editorial Reviews

Review

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, Vivian Arend.

----
COPPER KING, available now. A prequel to the Takhini Wolves, and a great introduction to the Granite Lake Wolves world.

There are four books in the Takhini Wolves series
BLACK GOLD
SILVER MINE
DIAMOND DUST (Rita Nominated)
MOON SHINE

Also check out the 6 books in the Granite Lake Wolves series. Light-hearted, happily-ever-afters.

“The intense sexual encounters between Gem and Shaun, paired with the thickness in the air of an always lingering fight, are sure to keep the pages turning. Readers who find novels like Kerrelyn Sparks’s The Vampire and the Virgin appealing will surely enjoy taking a bite out of this first title in the ‘Takhini Wolves’ series.”

—Library Journal

“This anthology combines two entertaining reads…”

—RT Book Reviews magazine on Under the Northern Lights

“…the story is a fun and very hot read.”

Book Description

With all this friends settling down, Shaun thinks there may be something to this love-and-roses crap. He never thought the one to push his forever button would be a silver-spooned Southern debutante. Gem’s environmental project in Alaska is her declaration of independence. Except there’s something in the air that unexpectedly rouses her mating hormones. Moments after their eyes lock, the deed is done—and done thoroughly. When the pheromone dust settles, though, all the reasons they don’t belong together become painfully clear. It’s enough to make a wolf learn a whole new set of cuss words…

Overall great story with some suspense and romance.

The book has potential but is so slow that it was really hard to stay with it.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys paranormal romance.

This book is an offshoot of Arend's really terrific Granite Lake Wolf series (Wolf Signs: Granite Lake Wolves, Book 1, Wolf Flight: Granite Lake Wolves, Book 2, Wolf Games: Granite Lake Wolves, Book 3 and Wolf Tracks: Granite Lake Wolves, Book 4 with Wolf Lines to be released next summer) and characters from there are woven up a little here - and TJ from Wolf Tracks makes a little cameo. While this reads perfectly well as a standalone, it's really a pleasure to have some extra background with the Wolfies.

I usually take notes when I read and the top line on my notepad for this one is, "1% - laughed out loud." The book starts off with a barroom brawl between a bunch of drunken bear shifters that Evan and Shaun are breaking up while casually talking. It's so funny and playful - exactly one of the reasons I've enjoyed all of the Granite Lake books and now this one. There were little moments sprinkled through the book that would just catch me off guard and make me laugh (they often seem to have involved those bear shifters).

I loved both Gem and Shaun a lot. She's a total fish out of water in the Yukon. Not just Daddy's Sheltered Princess, she comes from an area where wolves just don't shift for pleasure, so Shaun's entire way of being a wolf is alien to her.

Many years ago I lived in Fort Nelson, British Columbia, situated on the border of the Yukon Territories. I visited Whitehorse on a number of occasions with friends and still remember the breathtaking beauty of the area, the ambiance of the town and the welcoming nature of the people. (Now mind you, as far as I know I didn't run into any wolf shifters during my travels. lol) The reason I'm sharing this information is that in Black Gold, I feel Vivian Arend penned a very apt reflection of the spectacular beauty of the land, the wildlife inhabitants and the people who choose this area of Canada as their home.

The story is divided into 3 parts, and Ms. Arend selected a stanza from the wonderful lyrical poetry of Robert Service as the introduction to each section. The poetry sets the theme and tone as the plot of Black Gold advances.

Shaun Stevens is a helicopter pilot who runs a charter business with a couple of the other Takhini Pack shifters. While waiting for his next booking to arrive Shaun is helping out working as a bouncer at the Moonshine Inn, which is the pack's home base. Evan, the Takhini Pack's Alpha is Shaun's friend. These shifters are rough, rowdy, and cuss up a storm, and they are innately sexual. As pack Alpha, Evan is smart and diplomatic taking his significant responsibilities seriously. Shaun, lives the footloose and fancy free life, responsibilities aren't on the menu. Evan sees great potential in his friend but doesn't know quiet how to encourage Shaun to come into his own. In that vain Evan pulls Shaun into his office for a heart to heart and introduces him to some of special home brewed hooch he has tucked away. The scene is hilarious particularly when Shaun begins to feel the effects of the liquid fire.

Book 1 "Takhini Wolves". Book 2 "Silver Mine" (due for release September 2012).

Plot:
Gem has come to Canada to complete her research and get away from her protective father. Shaun needs a goal in his life, something and someone to care about. As Mates, they may well find exactly what they each need - love, respect, freedom, and someone to Love.

Comments:
- Contemporary paranormal erotic romance set in Canada (particularly rural areas).
- 3753 kindle locations, 65,612 words, but finishes around 93%.
- m/f - reasonably frequent, explicit, caring.
- We previously met Shaun, Tad's business partner and member of Whitehorse Pack, in "Wolf Flight".
- Some characters from Arend's previous series (eg TJ) appear, and there are a few references to their stories. This series is set in the same World and time, but the books are substantially longer and have a different overarching plot. It is not necessary for the reader to have read Arend's "Granite Lake Wolves" series, to enjoy this one.
- Includes excerpts from "Wolf Tracks" by Vivian Arend, "The Seven Year Witch" by Jodi Redford, and "Cipher" by Moira Rogers.

Vivian Arend in one word: Adventurous. In a sentence: Willing to try just about anything once. That wide-eyed attitude has taken her around North America, through parts of Europe, and into Central and South America, often with no running water.

Her optimistic outlook meant when challenged to write a book, she gave it a shot, and discovered creating worlds to play in was nearly as addictive as traveling the real one. Now a New York Times and USA bestselling author of over 40 novels and short stories in both contemporary and paranormal genres, Vivian continues to explore, write and otherwise keep herself well entertained.
